Chapter 14: Shimmer

The first time I even stepped foot near Sacred Pines playground was after school, after hearing those kids in my math class talk about it. Curiosity took over me, intrigued by the stupidity, but creativity, of their stories. I wanted to see for myself if those stories were true. If the experiences they spoke of were true.

If my hand would disappear. If I would disappear for a half hour, but when I came back, it would be a few days later. If something would push me out upon walking into the woods.

I got to the playground and chickened out. I never went in, only stared at it from afar. How the trees swayed and whistled with the wind. I imagined making them taller with my magic, so tall, taller than the trees in a jungle. At that age, I couldn’t do any nature magic, but I dreamed about what it would look like.

I wished I could embrace the whole woods, hug every single tree and give them names. Classic twelve-year-old nature girl stuff.
