Chapter 6: Our New Routine

Emerging from the capsules, we regrouped in the bustling lobby, a hub of activity and noise. Theo, the perennial crybaby, wailed and caused a ruckus in the adjacent capsule. Alice, although quiet, betrayed her tear-stained eyes, revealing her inner turmoil. We couldn't resist poking fun at Theo, using his cries as an opportunity for amusement. Amidst the commotion, I searched for Hana, and to my surprise, I spotted her emerging from her capsule with a cheerful expression, happily licking the toffee she had received. Not a hint of tears lingered on her face.

Astonished, I beckoned her to join our circle. However, her eagerness got the better of her, and she stumbled and fell. In a remarkable display of resilience, she quickly picked herself up and raced towards us, sporting a radiant smile. We asked if she was hurt, but she shook her head, dispelling our concerns. In that moment, I realized that her strength surpassed my own.

Guided to the next room, we were met with a solemn announcement. A modest test awaited us, prompting a collective sigh of resignation. We took our designated seats at individual tables, each adorned with an illuminated screen. It took a moment to comprehend that these screens were interactive displays. We were instructed to exert ourselves and answer the questions to the best of our abilities. As the questions materialized, we found ourselves taken aback, exchanging bewildered glances and sharing nervous chuckles. The inquiries delved into our favorite games and preferred foods. Swiftly, we jotted down our responses, navigating the unfamiliar terrain of this peculiar examination. With the test concluded, we were granted respite, allowed to frolic and play on the expansive lawn, always under the watchful gaze of a select few authorities.

These playtimes became an opportunity for bonding as more children joined our group. Laughter reverberated through the air as we played and sang together, momentarily losing ourselves in the blissful realm of childhood innocence. Days melded into a week, and Aunt Carol remained a steadfast presence, offering a glimmer of familiarity and solace. However, the subsequent Monday ushered in a significant change to our routine. Playtime was curtailed, making way for additional injections and an intensified focus on academic studies. Once again, we found ourselves immersed in the dreary world of conventional schooling, the initial excitement waning into ennui. We were summoned twice daily, enduring the morning injections and having our blood collected in the evening. The repetitive nature of this regimen took its toll, with many of us falling ill. Adding to our mounting apprehension, some of our fellow children were inexplicably whisked away, leaving us to grapple with an unsettling realization: the future seemed uncertain.
