As Damian enjoyed his breakfast, he started to inquire about his current state.
"So, how long would it take for me to heal?" Damian asked with a piece of bread on hand,
Mia quickly fixed her sitting posture and started to answer Damian's question.
"It should take you about three more days of healing!" Mia answered with a joyful smile.
Damian paused when he heard Mia's answer.
'Three more days? I remembered I shattered my kneecaps.' Damian thought.
He started to be suspicious of his own body's healing factor.
He should've become a cripple after that battle.
'But what I don't understand is why I took such a risk.' Damian questioned.
Damian was a conservative man.
Not in a political sense, but in a personality sense.
He didn't like taking risks.
He usually thought out his plans, and always made sure to keep a lookout for future
circumstances.
So why did he kick a wolf to till the point of shattering his kneecaps?
Why would he do something that was entirely against his nature?
Damian went back to the battlefield and remembered what he was feeling.
He closed his eyes as he immersed himself in his experience.
'Mmm. So that's what I felt.' Damian thought.
What did he feel?
A sense of satisfaction.
A central meaning forming.
A call to action.
A sense of conquest...
Damian opened his eyes as he got out of his thoughts.
He touched his knee and only felt a slight bump.
He touched his arms and found the cuts weren't too deep.
He saw the blood on his bandages and saw the blood already drying up.
Damian frowned as he looked at his injuries.
This was beyond his expectations.
'What the hell is going on...?' Damian thought in surprise.
Mia saw Damian's frown and quickly got nervous.
Why was he suddenly angry!
Mia was losing her mind for a moment before she saw Damian's gaze.
As Damian stared at his wounds, Mia quickly got an idea to change his mood.
"You didn't get any major injuries sir Damian." Mia said with a panicking tone.
Damian looked up as he stared at Mia. Asking for an explanation.
Mia felt naked under Damian's cold, arrogant look. But that only seemed to give her more motivation, as she pushed her nervousness down into the depths of her heart as she answered.
"You only had a few bruises on your knee, while the cuts on your arms and legs weren't severe enough for you to bleed out. We just stitched some wounds and wrapped the bandages up to catch some leaking blood." Answered Mia.
"Just a few bruises...?" Damian said out loud.
Mia's eyes widened as she seemed to have started panicking again.
'I-I mean your injuries were very severe! Oh you poor thing, you came in here ragged!' Mia said in her mind as she shouted in her thoughts.
But before Mia could make a fool of herself, she saw Damian nod with a satisfied expression.
"You've done a good job in healing me." Damian said with unconscious arrogance.
'Well, something about me must have changed.' Damian figured in his thoughts.
Him suddenly having a healing factor was something uncommon to him.
If this didn't indicate a change, then what could?
As Damian mused in his thoughts, Mia was starting to calm her nervous heart.
'I was so close to saying something stupid!' Mia berated in her mind.
'Deep breaths Mia, deep breaths...' Mia thought as she started to calm her breathing.
Damian heard Mia's heavy breaths and felt worried for her.
"Are you ok?" Damian asked with worry.
'Oh come on!' Mia screamed in her mind.
"I-I'm fine. Just a bit nervous." Mia answered.
Damian nodded before he felt a growl from his stomach again.
He grabbed it as he had a bewildered expression on his face.
'Didn't I just eat?' Damian thought with shock.
He had like, five pieces of bread with soup. It even had some meat chunks in there!
So him feeling hungry now was unimaginable.
But Damian attributed it to the changes in his body.
I mean, some benefits gotta have some disadvantages, right?
Damian cleared his throat as he stated a request.
"Ah-hmm. Sorry, but do you have any more food?" Damian asked with a bitter smile.
Mia suddenly felt her shame be saved by the goddess of love, figuring this was her time to leave before she lost it.
"Yes! I'll go get more food right away!" Mia said with enthusiasm as she grabbed the plates by her side.
'Stupid Mia! You should've known darling eats more than that!' Mia thought as she quickly ran off to get more food.
"Yes yes..." Damian gave a half-hearted reply as he sat down to think about his situation.
'What changed?' Damian asked himself as he rubbed his chin.
'I'm not a cultivator that's for sure. I feel like I'm still missing something.'
'But then, what happened to me...?'
Damian went into contemplation as he continued rubbing his chin in thought. Stringing together all the information he had, to figure out what was different.
'Let's take this step by step...'
'First, I started to have a certain feeling of desire from inside me. As if I was satiating a sort of addiction'
'Then, I started to take immense risks to feel that high. Charging into a horde of twenty or so wolves just to get my fix.'
'The most impressive part was I survived and I even killed all of them.'
'And now...'
Damian looked at his left knee as he paused for a moment.
He furrowed his brows as he started collecting the last of his thoughts.
'A shattered knee healed till I just got bruises.' Damian thought as he checked his bandages.
'But if a shattered knee could heal so fast, then why is it taking so long to heal my bites...'
Damian looked down as he patted his hungry stomach again.
'I probably haven't healed completely because I'm missing food.' Damian considered as he compiled the last of his thoughts.
'Even though I don't know what I've become, I at least know what has changed about me.'
'My injuries heal faster, but now I need more food to keep up with that.'
Just as Damian finished his thoughts, Mia suddenly barged into the tent with some bread in her hands and warm soup. Damian could see some meat pieces floating up as he stared at the soup.
'I'm sure darling won't be hungry this time!' Mia thought with elation as he walked into the tent with excitement.
"I'm here with the food sir Damian!" Mia said as she sat beside Damian from before.
Damian gave a charming smile and a nod as he took the food and started eating.
Damian just started munching as he sat down eating the food in the most elegant way possible before Mia.
He was trying to increase his reputation in camp. And if he should start anywhere, it should first start with the nurse.
Damian didn't say anything as he ate the second serving of his food, while Mia just sat beside him, watching him eat.
'He's so dreamy when he eats~' Mia thought in a daze.
'I guess this is why girls like cooking for their hubbies so much.'
As Damian continued eating, Mia just sat besides not doing anything. Just staring.
'Does this girl want something?' Damina thought as he was being increasingly creeped out by the girl beside him.
But he just cleared his throat as he decided to ask more questions about the camp.
"So who brought me back from the battle?" Damian asked as he ate his third piece of bread.
Mia suddenly felt a shock run through her body as she seemed to have been pulled out of her reverie.
She quickly shook her head as she started answering Damian's question.
"A soldier carried you out on his back. He had a bleeding bandaged arm, that for some reason refused anyone to look at." Mia said as she started remembering the events from two days ago.
"The nurses were very worried that he could've gotten an infection from all that blood. But all he said then was he got the blood from the beasts he was fighting. It wasn't his blood apparently." Mia said as she told the story in a very concise form.
"Well, do you know who the soldier was?" Damian inquired.
"He said his name was Jonah." Mia nodded her head as she answered.
Damian thought back to Jonah's stump of an arm.
He remembered that he saw the wound on his arm close up as it seemed to have started healing his entire arm back.
Damian thought about Jonah's situation and compared it to his own.
'I have the same symptoms as him.' Damian thought as he continued eating his food.
'He probably knows something...'
Mia didn't try to continue the small talk and just waited for Damian to eat his food.
As Damian continued eating his food and ignoring her, Mia started to have other thoughts.
'Maybe I should've brought some food for myself.' Mia thought as she looked at Damian's voracious appetite.
Damian quickly finished his soup and ate all of the meat pieces as he seemed to let a breath of satisfaction out.
'Finally, I'm full.' Damina thought with a smile on his face as he stared at Mia.
"Did you have anything to tell me about my injuries?" Damian asked with a smile.
Mia got flustered before she looked down in embarrassment.
"I needed to change your bandages..." Mia said as she looked down with a blush.
'Just leave already!' Damian thought.
"Umm, can I change my clothes before you start?" Damian asked as he gave a forced smile.
Mia quickly blushed as she ran out in a hurry.
"Sorry! I'll be back in 30 minutes!" Mia said as she ran out of the tent.
Damian held his forced smile for a bit longer before he gave a deep sigh of exaustion.
'I feel tired.' Damian thought as he started to lay down on his bed.
'But why do I feel so hungry...' Damian pondered as he thought about the girl for the next thirty minutes.
I forgot to say this last author's notes, but I started to re-edit some of my older chapters.
For example I changed the chapter 'Luring a Wolf' into 'Wolf's Memories.' I went slightly more in depth into Jonah's backstory, but not enough to change him completely. Just added some extra details that weren't there before.
I also changed the chapter 'Can I Get Some Candy?' a lot as well. I give more motivation behind why Sarah wanted to seduce Hanz which will come in handy later in the story. (I ain't gonna spoil what that's about) and also improved the grammar significantly so the order of events actually made sense.
And I changed the shota chapter and completely scrapped it. I came to understand that it really wasn't in that much of a good taste and that I could probably use that scene later on the story for much greater effect. Instead I talk more about Sarah's views on life and how her life was different from the other girl's.
So if you're an old reader, give 'The Road Ahead' and 'A Wolf's Memories' another read. I'm sure you guys would love it.
I'm gonna change some of my older chapters to update the grammar and flow of the story so I could make it easier to read and enjoy.
Hope you add this book to your collection (if you haven't already), and send a powerstone if you think the book deserves it.
Happy reading everyone!
