31. The Trial

The commander looked at the man. "Earl James, you are summoned to the high court to answer for the slaves that were discovered in your warehouse."

The Earl heard the words and knew that he was so focused on what happened with Aureus that he completely forget that he had slaves in his warehouse. How could have made such a stupid mistake? They were supposed to be shipped out in a couple of days so he was not that worried about him. Then he remembered that a big man broke in last night and a big man was reported at the gate with Aureus.

Without a word of complaint or any questions the Earl stood and walked around the desk. There was an hourglass on the desk with all the sand out of it. He flipped it over. "Teleportation spells will now work until the sand runs out."

The mage bowed his head slightly. "Thank you Earl." The mage saw how fast the sand was moving and quickly cast his spell. Once it was fully formed they three men stepped through. The Earl knew that he was defeated and there was no use in fighting back. He hoped that if he just came clean with everything his life and family would be spared. He knew he would serve hard labor but he would be alive. When he arrived he was surprised by how small the audience was.

The Duke and high Priest were sitting at a table on a raised dais. When the Earl looked around he only saw the people that were directly involved with everything. He then saw the man that he heard about but had never seen. He was the one that caused all of this. Rage burned in his heart for a few moments and then he quit lying to himself. His greed had caused all of this. "Your Grace you can let Grand Priest Robins save her spells. I will tell you everything."

The Earl saw the girl was there as well and that she was still chained to the stone. He was actually shocked that the heavy stone was still attached to the chain. He pulled a key form around his neck and handed it to the commander. "That will remove the chain from the lady's leg." Everyone was surprised that he would so freely admit it. "I understand that I have made a lot of greedy and stupid mistakes lately. I will tell you everything in hopes that my son will not be painted with the same brush. We all know my darling wife will run to her daddy if she hasn't already and he will do the paperwork to try and take everything. But my son is not even in the city. And honestly I am hoping for hard labor and not death."

"I make no promises about the labor versus death but your son is in no danger of being tarnished with the same brush."

"Thank you, your grace. Where would you like me to start?"

"I will start with why?"

"Greed and power. I had Lady Aureus kidnapped so that Sir Lions would not notice that his silver coin from the king had been taken. The ransom was not important just him being distracted. Then I had the coin reset and I was trying to find the opportunity to use it on your property. I was hoping the extra property would make the King boost my title to that of Duke."

"Where is the silver coin now?"

"The henchman that I hired sent it to my son instead of me."

Sir Lions stood up and held the coin up. "The coin was returned to me earlier today."

The Earl had a fearful look on his face. "My son?"

Novum stood up. "Earl your son and I came to odds about his tastes and he and a few hired thugs tried to kill me. If it is any consolation he was quick."

"Why wasn't I notified?"

"He was living under the name Jim Stewart. I assume he was worried that rumors from here would follow him or rumors from there when he came back sir."

"And let me guess there was just enough information in the letter with the coin to point you here?"

"Yes sir."

"Thank you for the information young man."

The Duke spoke again. "What about the slaves?"

"Use of the warehouse was the price of the kidnapping. I had no idea that any slaves were there. Henry said that he would require half the gold and the use of the warehouse for a full month with no questions asked. I assumed that he was smuggling something but in all honesty I had no idea it was slaves."

"Thank you for your honesty Earl. Do you have anything else to say before I pass judgement?"

The Earl pulled a coin out of his pouch and tossed it to Sir Lions. "Please bind that quickly before my father-in-law files his paperwork. I swear in front of the Duke and the Church that I give this in reparations of my actions against your family of own free will. Sir Lions please?"

Sir Lions cut his finger and smeared blood on the coin and felt the link set in. "My actions against your were purely business and had anyone else had that coin I would not have bothered you and for that I am truly sorry. But that fact it that I hate my father-in-law with a burning passion. And Lady Aureus, please accept my humblest apologizes and do not let the hate that I deserve nest in your heart. Your Grace since I know that my son is gone flip a coin on the hard labor or death. I am at peace with either."

The Duke looked at him and you could tell that he was thinking. "Earl, what happened to the man that was using the warehouse?"

"He is dead, your grace. He was killed the night that Lady Aureus was taken from the property. He was her guard."

"I see. Please give me a few moments." The mage waved his hand and a bubble surrounded the small group. "Priest Robins, what do you think?"

"I did not put him under a full truth spell but I put a spell on myself to detect lies and he believes every word that he is saying. And given his behavior as of late and what I know of him from before I believe him."

"Commander, your opinion?"

"I agree with Priest Robins."

The mage spoke up. "Before you ask me I think that they are right. I want to do some research into the man that used the warehouse but he had nothing to do with that."

"Good then it is not me being sentimental to old times when we were young. Thank you all." He nodded to the mage who waved his hand and dispersed the spell. "Earl James. As of this moment you are to be stripped of your title. You will remain in the city dungeons until the investigation into the man at the warehouse is complete and after that you will be sent to a prison mine for ten years. After that you will be set free to do as you please."

"Thank you your Grace. The young man will be the quickest way to where Henry was staying. He only came into the main house one time and that was to deliver a letter from my son."

The commander stepped up beside him and motioned for him to lead the way out of the room. Mr. James knew the way to the dungeons from here and he was honestly happy that they were not leading him out in cuffs. By law he should have been stripped to rags and taken out if here in chains. It was small curtesy for the past.

The mage walked over to Novum. "Would you please show me where he was staying?"

Novum looked at the man. "Sir can it please wait until tomorrow? I did not sleep last night and have only eaten a pastry since dinner last night. I am not sure I could lead you without passing out along the way."

"You are right. And I do not have the right spells memorized for the type of investigation that I will be conducting. Would you please swing by the Duke's manor in the morning and show me the way?"

"I would be glad to." He bowed to everyone there. "If there is nothing else would you all please excuse me."

The Duke spoke up. "After you assist my mage tomorrow would you please come by the manor and visit with me. I have a few things that I would like to discuss with you. Actually Sir Lions I would like to see you as well."

"Your Grace if it would be easier for you to meet with us now I am sure that I can stay awake for a while longer."

"No need Novum. Just get some rest and come and see me tomorrow."

Novum gave him another deep bow. "Of course your Grace."

"Novum would you prefer to stay at our home tonight? I am sure that it will be more comfortable than any inn."

"Sir Lions I am sure that you are right but the room is paid for and I need some fresh clothing. If you will excuse me." As soon as he stepped through the door he received several notifications.

The system must have been holding all of his experience that had anything to do with the golden girl mission until it completely resolved itself. 'System does the slave rescue count as a separate mission or part of the same mission?'

'Thank you system.' Novum headed for the inn. He did not even bother to eat he just went straight to bed.

The sun cut through the curtain that he did not shut the night before since the sun was on the other side of the building and he did not realize how bad it would be. But since he slept from early evening and through the night he was not going to be able to go back to sleep. He used slipped out to the outhouses and took care of his morning business. He came to the dining room and ordered a big breakfast, probably enough for two people, and while he waited he opened up his character sheet.

Level seven took about a minute since it was pretty much just skill points. Level eight was were he was having some trouble deciding. Not only did he have a fighter bonus feat but also had an ability point. After giving up his old sword with the keen ability he was now able to improve the threat range of a weapon with a feat and that was the way he went with that. Now that he had the belt his strength was more than enough so he put the point into his constitution. It was not enough to adjust his health but it was a base for later.

As he finished up the level eight upgrade his food came out and he ate like he was starving. He had a pastry in just a day and he was way to big to only eat that much. He finished off the first serving and then started on the second without slowing down. Before he realized it the second helping was gone. He ordered one more and another coffee. While he was waiting for his third breakfast he opened up his sheet and went to work on level nine. After a lot of debate he realized that even thought he had not used his bow much in the city he would use it more back at his house. He took a feat that was great for using a bow at shorter distances. He was not very interest in that feat but he needed it for the next couple of archery feats that he wanted.

Novum finished his third breakfast and with a smile on his face walked out of the inn. He stopped outside rolled a cigarette and headed for the Duke's manor. Now he just had to figure out where it was.
