Chapter 12: Surprise Visits
“Alex!” I yelled, clutching my chest.
“What the h*ll is wrong with you?” Alex shot back at me, her posture mimicking my own.
“Me? You can’t sneak up on people like that!” I said, leaning against the wall trying to get my heart rate down.
“I didn’t sneak up on you,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I literally walked behind you.”
“Agree to disagree.”
“What’s got you so jumpy anyway?” she asked, looking at me with concern.
“Sorry, the last few days have been really strange,” I said, pushing off the wall and wrapping my arms around her.
“Hey,” she said softly, welcoming my embrace. “Want to talk about it?”
“Not really,” I said, sighing against her shoulder.
As much as I wished I could tell her what had happened, I knew I couldn’t. Alex was the one constant normal thing I had left, and I didn’t want to ruin that… not yet anyway.
“I’ll make us some tea,” she offered, trying to cheer me up.
“That sounds great.”
