What's a Bonfire

-Jo-

"Nonsense!"

A strong, firm voice echoes through our normally calm hallways, accompanied by a loud bang of a fist against a desk. "How am I supposed to protect her-" The tall, black-haired girl went silent when another girl, blonde this time, came up and whispered into her ear. She aggressively pulled her arm from the girl's touch. "Mother and father-"

A boy, their same age probably, stood up between the two and said something under his breath to the black-haired girl. The girl sneered at Ms. Winter, and I would have sworn on the stand that the front desk clerk gulped. As the large group of 6 students ducked their heads, probably to avoid the whispers and stares, I caught the black-haired girl's eyes.

My heart caught in my throat and I gripped my backpack, swung over my one shoulder. I could hear Bonnie saying something in my ear but all I could focus on was her eyes. The bright, stormy grey eyes nearly glowed under the shadow of her thin, silver jacket. I could see her even thinner black hair, drawn back into a tall ponytail. She scowled at me and I turned away, just barely catching the blonde one looking at me. By the time I looked back, the group had turned back around and were racing down the hallway.

A sudden snapping sound caught my attention and I turned to look at Bonnie, my eyes widening slightly. She was smirking. "Hellooooo," She said, drawing out the last note. "Earth to Jo? Are you off the hot kid's train yet?"

I blushed feverishly, looking down. "I-i wasn't on the hot kids' train." I said defensively. My voice was naturally deeper than most of the girls in my town and it often caused me to stay hushed and quiet when I spoke. Bonnie stopped and crossed her arms.

"Really? What did I say?"

I looked down shamefully. "I-err..." I chewed on my lip, scrambling for an answer. I found none. Bonnie shook her head. "Anyway, you want to come with us?"

I looked up at her, confused. "Come where?"

"The bonfire tonight." She smiled. "Jersey and Brandon want to go to our spot in the woods and make smores. They said they have a surprise for us tonight. We have to go."

Bonnie basically clung to my forearm and despite the feeling in my stomach, I nodded. "Yeah, yeah of course. We have to."

Bonnie squealed and I fought back a wince. As she continued to talk on and on about what she was going to have to wear, I thought back to the new girl's eyes. I'd never seen anything like them before. Who is she? And what had the boy said to her to make her calm down so quickly?

What had her upset anyway?

-Muriel-

"Nonsense!" My sister yelled out, bringing her fist down onto the table. I winced, looking around and noticing the people turning to look at us. 'Great, just what we need.' I thought grimly. I reached over, touching her arm sending out a calming wave. I did my best to press a calming wave into her mind but I could feel her pushing me away. "Sister, enough. Just take the paper, I have classes with each of the twins, I'll be fine."

When Glasya realized what I was doing, she pulled her arm from my reach. "Mother and father-" I stepped back, ready for another fight with my sister, and scowled when Dagon stepped between us.

"-Aren't here right now. People are watching, Glasya, be reasonable. Let's not mess this up before we even start." For a moment, my sister looked ready to argue with him. "How will you explain to your father why we had to leave?" He whispered low enough for only my sister and I to hear.

I glanced behind us, seeing the Death Triplets wringing their hands and looking around at the people whispering. They were anxious. Another glance at the Demon Triplets and I could tell they felt the same, pulling their identical black hoods above their heads. Just beyond them, I saw a girl looking at me. No.

Not me. My sister. Her eyes were blown wide slightly, entranced by Glasya.

My sister pulled up her hood and turned around. She must have noticed the girl and she scowled. For a second, she looked at me and I turned away, following my sister and leading the rest of us.

Walking down the hall, I heard another girl say the word "bonfire". What is a bonfire?
