“Phoenix!” Samantha shouts. I slam the brake abruptly.
Fuck! I almost bump into another car. My heart palpitates. I grip the steering wheel stronger with my sweaty palms. I can feel my lungs expand laboriously which makes it me difficult to breathe.
My head snaps at Samantha. Her face is pale and she’s swallowing hard with a horrified look on her face.
“My love, are you okay?” I ask shakily.
She bobs her head, unable to speak.
“I-I am sorry. I was just thinking about the flowers, Samantha. I’m sorry.” I tell her, blinking my eyes rapidly, then I focus back on the road.
“It’s okay, Phoenix. I’m fine.” She squeezes my arm with her cold sweaty palm.
“I don’t want you to be just fine. I want you to be great.”
“I’ll be great as soon as you feed me.” This time, she smiles.
“I will feed you whatever you want,” I answer instantly.
“What are you gonna feed me, Phoenix?”
“Anything you want, my love, but definitely a mushrooms-free.”
