The situation is certainly dire. But it is close to redemption.
A few people I have met and know, some relatives, have died from Covid. They were elderly and lived in long-term care facilities.
Roughly double that number of people (in my circle) have gotten a Covid infection and lived.
Vaccines and antibody treatments seem to be good at reducing the risk of the severe symptoms.
You might say the worst outcome is that we will not be fast enough in vaccinations and new treatments. Losing the race against virus variants.
But that is not the dire situation I fear most.
I fear the susceptibility fuzzy-headed thinking.
News stories that describe how masks are causing people to get sick. People going to large mask-free rallies and events.
A ground-swell of surprisingly well funded political groups to limit the local health authorities.
A disconnect which praises the closing of borders and airports, but then promotes health guideline defiance.
Life expectancies have dropped years since this pandemic. Variants of Covid are sometime more deadly and faster spreading.
If we can't stay clear-headed and rational. Maybe that is the worst that could happen, or will lead to it.
