I made it into the exam and my mom split off into the stands with Shike, Belle, and Alexia's parents. They grouped together and watched us all as we gathered for the exam.
"Hello, students! Or, to-be students I should say! Today, you will be testing your skills for admission into MTG! We will observe you thoroughly and see if your ability to fight can be expanded upon, so for this exam, use everything you can! For our first match, I will be turning to Ali and Lucas, Heroes of MTG, and their child, Sky Asterio!" The man said. So... that must've been Zach...
Zach looked around at the crowd as they gasped and sat confused behind their hands covering their mouths, attempting to hide their expressions. Well, it looked like I had people I needed to impress.
"Going against Sky is the girl from a faraway land! Buusu Achamo! Now, for this fight, I won't be watching who wins, I will be watching how they react to each other's abilities. That being said, on three, I want you two to unleash everything you have and try to stomp your opponent. Don't worry about injuries, we have Gabrielle, my lovely assistant, here to assist you afterward." Zach said. He pointed to Gabrielle, who reminded me a lot of Cynthia.
"Three! Begin the fight!" Zach yelled out. Buusu turned her head, revealing her pink eyes hidden behind her long, black bangs. Her hair was jet-black, fitting her scary personality and smile.
"Sorry, Asterio, this fight was over before it started," Buusu said, blinking slowly and locking her gaze into mine.
I reinforced my body with strands as soon as Zach told us to fight, and I felt a blade scathe my back and hit the strands, breaking through them. How did she get behind me?! But, she was also in front of me?!
"Huh?!" Buusu clicked her tongue in irritation and charged at me. She held a katana in her hands... was it real? Could it actually hurt me?!
I pulled out my saber from thin air and swung downward at her to eliminate her charge. As soon as she dodged, I realized that I wasn't moving at all, I probably looked cocky to Buusu, when I didn't really mean to at all.
I dodged her next strike with a slim margin, ducking under the sharp blade she held in her hands as it cut through the air.
Using my nimble footing, I was able to gain some distance, but Buusu was an up-close-and-personal type of fighter, so I couldn't even create enough distance to breathe.
I threw my saber at her and it dissipated before she could catch it. I could see she was confused, and I used that to my advantage. I charged in at the Buusu girl and she dropped to the floor while doing the splits, kicking out my heels, and flipping her katana around to slam it into my chest.
When I trained with Mom during those two weeks, she talked about using my strands in a way unique to me. I was the wielder, not her, so I needed my own style of fighting. I never really thought about how to fight until that katana came close to my chest.
I put all of the strands into my right hand and grabbed the katana blade, snapping it at the top and slamming my heel into Buusu's stomach. She lost all the air in her lungs and was viciously thrown back, as I reinforced my heel as well to give it more strength. Even after that onslaught of attacks, she was still standing.
"Observe, students! This is what a real fight looks like!" Zach shouted. The crowd started to pick their sides as I pushed my body back up with a frown. This girl... she was persistent. I had to actually try for my placement.
Buusu ran back and forth, her hair swinging wildly in the breeze we had to fight against, something about her was menacing... maybe it was her deadly stare or the color of her eyes, but something felt off when I was fighting her.
Do I know this girl?
My saber and her katana clashed together and created that ugly noise, but Buusu wasn't fazed at all by it. That's it, she's either deaf, or she has had training with strands before because every single person in the crowd covered their ears when that noise emitted.
I threw quick jabs at her head, forcing her to dodge and lose her footing. I continued to swing back and forth at her, but her concentration was unbreakable and she was far too nimble for me to counter any of her attacks. She had to have fighting experience before... but from where?! Who else would have strands? Did Mom teach Buusu too?
…Or did a Rubeki?
I went for her legs and she jumped over my saber, getting ready to slam her katana down on my head. She couldn't have trained against a Rubeki, she was surprised to see me reinforce my body... or was she just surprised I had the same ability as her?
I took a risky strike from Buusu and slammed my saber into her left arm. Surely enough, I could see strands cut away from the blade of the saber and she jumped backward with a speck of blood coming out of her arm. She looked at me funny, and I matched her look.
It was undeniable that Buusu was trained by somebody with strands, and it must've been a Rubeki.
"I'm surprised you're this resilient!" I said to Buusu.
"Don't talk to me, Asterio." She told me. I got closer to her and she reacted by raising her sword, but I only smiled and covered the way my mouth moved so the crowd couldn't see me.
'I like your strands. Which Rubeki raised you?' I mouthed out to her. Buusu seemed infuriated and charged in again, but her composure had completely broken. She was filled with rage and hatred for some reason, unbeknownst to me, so I took advantage of it.
I snapped her katana at the hilt, planted my knee into her stomach, and punched her with a reinforced fist, sending her far back right next to the podium Zach stood behind.
"And it looks like we have our winner folks! Sky Asterio! But, because of the complexity of these two prodigies, I've decided to place them both in A-Rank for MTG! Congratulate our new students, Sky Asterio and Buusu Achamo!" The crowd erupted with a loud cheering, but it seemed like my mom was louder than anybody else. My dad smiled at me, but I didn't want to walk over to them just yet.
I turned over to Buusu and held out my hand. She swatted it away and pushed herself up of her own accord.
"Don't touch me. That won't be our last fight, Sky Asterio." Buusu said to me before walking back to her friends in the stadium. They all looked at me with malice, but two of her friends, both seemed to be guys who looked like they would be trouble, were smiling. I reciprocated the hateful look and turned back toward my friends and family with a smile.
"Sky! That was amazing! Your training really paid off huh?!" Shike yelled out to me.
"I guess so! Let's see what you're made of." I told Shike.
