Chapter 34

“What?” he asked.

Nate looked up, wagged his head back and forth as if weighing his decision to speak. “You’ve got sexy toes, Rusty.” He shrugged, then continued walking along the water’s edge.

Rusty stood for a minute, watching Nate’s back. He’s a little crazy, maybe. But I like him.He laughed and quickstepped to catch up with the mysterious Nate Dunn.

A half hour on the beach was enough for both of them to kick up an appetite for lunch. They opted for the fish-and-chips shop across the street from where they’d parked.

“I’ve got food there before,” Nate said, “though it’s been a while. But I’m betting it’s still good.”

It was. They’d carried it out to sit on the low seawall that lined a narrow street called Marine Parade at the top of the beach. Rusty wanted a beer with his, so they’d picked some up at the Four Square market on Oroua Street. Nate, however, had opted for Coke.
