Darian shrugged. “I used that to my advantage. I gave them what they wanted, what they expectedfrom me. I threw all my weight into the game and brought down the other teams’ quarterbacks, time and again. Anyone with the ball, I went for. I didn’t score any touchdowns, hardly even ran if I could help it, but I tore through the opposition like a battering ram, I’m telling you. And when scouts from State came up to see me play, they offered me a full scholarship in any program I wanted, just as long as I played for them.”
Without Darian’s direct gaze pinning him down, Stacy found his voice. “So you did.” The teacher nodded and, encouraged, Stacy asked, “And you just stayed here after that? Why’d you go into carpentry?”
“Long story.” Darian brushed the question aside with a wave of his hand. “What about you? I heard you went here what, two years ago?”
