Volume 1 - Chapter 24: Ambush

"Soooo, are we just walking around blindly till we find something?" Asked Tifa as she put her arms behind her head.

"That's correct since this mission is mostly about elimination and evaluating your skill on the field." Said Glynda as she looked around.

Sora's team wasn't lucky or unlucky for some since they couldn't find a single Grimms during their exploration.

"I honestly would have thought there would be more Grimms inside this place after hearing many legends about it and one of Remnant's forbidden grounds." Said Sora as he examined his surroundings helplessly.

"This is indeed more peaceful when we did it right, Lyria?" said Gran, who yawned as he trailed behind the group.

"Mhhm, this is very peaceful compared to ours."

They continued walking around and keeping their guard even though they hadn't encountered a single Grimms.

You never know when you'll encounter danger till you meet it.

Until Atalanta stopped in place as she furtively looked at her surrounding. Her action was very brusque as it attracted the entire group's attention.

The group quickly understood with their wits as they drew out their weapon. Team JSTA regrouped with their back facing each other as they patiently waited for the danger to come.

"So, how is it, Atalanta?" whispered Jean as she observed their location. They were currently situated on a ruined plaza as they slowly walked toward the central fountain.

An open area would be much more comfortable for the team if they were to get ambushed.

"…Not good, we are getting surrounded, and there are many of them." Replied the nervous Atalanta as she aimed her bow toward an open window of a ruined house.

Sora also activated his semblance as his geo element covered the entire plaza. He felt many Grimms coming their way and the life force of a colossal Grimm leading the horde toward them.

Sora relayed his finding as team JSTA prepared to fight the incoming horde. Meanwhile, professor Glynda, Gran and Lyria were not far from them.

They wouldn't participate in this fight until JSTA can't handle the danger that comes from the Grimms.

"Atlanta, can you get a vantage point and snipe them? It would be great of us if you could." Asked Jean as she came up with a strategy to help them pass this hurdle.

"Of course, Jean." Replied Atalanta as she left the group and went toward a safe building on their left. She quickly climbed the walls as she crouched on the roof.

She took advantage of her Faunus sense as she quickly identified the incoming Grimms coming toward them.

"They are coming! The first waves of Grimms are coming from the front!" shouted Atalanta as she materialized an arrow as she, nocked it to her bow, and aimed at a Beowolf that was bigger than your average one outside of this kingdom.

"Tifa, you take the lead, and I will support you!"

"Yes, Jean!" said Tifa as she tightened her gloves and put on her guard.

"Atalanta, you support us from afar and kill as such as you can!"

"Yes!"

"Sora, can you separate those waves of Grimms? Please lower their numbers."

"Of course, Jean." Said Sora as he outstretched his hand as an orange-ish light shone from his palm

"Don't get trapped and overwhelmed by them! We don't know how strong they are, so play it safe! Don't waste too much Aura at once."

"GO!"

Sora thrusts his hands on the ground as crystallized walls made of geo-blocked three streets that led toward their current location but one.

The only accessible street Sora didn't block was the road in front of them as the group finally met the Grimms lurking near them, with a giant Beowolf leading the group toward them.

They could hear the ground cracking under the horde and the angry growl.

Tifa charged with her fists filled with Aura as she met an enormous Beowolf with his outstretched paws ready to shred Tifa if she was not careful.

Fortunately, Tifa is a skilled warrior, honing her skill even after coming to Beacon Academy. She met with the terrible monster as her fist overpowered the Grimm.

The Beowolf flew back as Tifa's fist hit its jaw and whined in pain.

"I still got it after all! Grimm of this kingdom or not, you can't defeat me!" said Tifa proudly as she continued her assault on the Grimms.

Meanwhile, the bystander trio hiding in a house looks at the fight from a window.

*Whistle*

"Tifa is powerful, huh? The Grimms within those walls are considerably strong." Said Gran as he witnessed Tifa winning against this huge Beowolf.

"Indeed, miss Lockhart is a solid hitter of team JSTA." Said Glynda as she agreed with Gran's comment.

Lyria was looking at them with worry as she fidgeted in place. Of course, Gran noticed his partner's current state and knew why.

Lyria is very kind-hearted and sometimes not suitable as a Huntsman, but by a twist of fate, they become linked together.

Because being a huntsman can be a very dangerous and sad job.

Gran crouched as he patted her hair to calm her down. "I know you are worried about them but don't worry, they are powerful, and it's not too late for us to jump and help them if something goes wrong, okay, Lyria?"

"…Yes, I understand, Gran." Said Lyria as his downcast face lightened up a little after she listened to Gran.

"For now, we can only trust them!"

"Yes, Gran! Trust!" said Lyria as she clenched her tiny fist in encouragement.

Glynda smiled at their sweet little interaction as she returned to observe team JSTA. She has a job to do, after all, as an instructor at Beacon Academy.

"They are really fierce guys, huh." Said Sora as he panted a little from the scuffle he had."

Sora was overlooking the battlefield and supported his teammates the best he could. He was also keeping an eye on Atalanta from the corner of his eye, and he didn't want her to get ambushed by some Grimms.

Fortunately, Atalanta was safe as she kept killing some Grimms and helping Tifa and Jean, who were on the frontline.

She was a vital member of their plan that could ensure their win against this horde of Grimm.

Their good situation lasted only a short time as the walls created by Sora were starting to crack as those Grimms tried to break them by force.

Sora naturally couldn't let them break it, or their situation would go terrible, so he fortified the walls and consumed much of his Aura.

Sora licked his dry lips and looked at Jean and Tifa with worry. The situation wasn't good as many Grimm were still on the frontline.

"Tifa! Jean! We must kill those Grimms fast, as my walls won't hold them any longer!" shouted Sora as he joined the frontline.

They needed to kill every Grimms or at least thin their number enough not to get overwhelmed by the incoming waves.

Jean looked back with a frown as she heard Sora's report and made a decision from her quick thinking. She quickly returned to her senses as she dove down from an excited Grimm that plunged toward her.

She unleashed her wind from her sword as the Grimm got absorbed inside the vortex and threw it back toward the horde.

The Grimm collided with the others as the horde staggered a little by this sudden intrusion. Jean, who saw the opening, quickly called for Sora, who was coming.

"I'll attract them, and you finish them." Said Jean as she didn't let Sora reacts because she had already charged toward the Grimms.

Jean passed by Tifa as she told her to retreat; Tifa didn't say anything as she quickly left the battlefield."

"Stay safe, Jean."

"Of course, Tifa."
