Erfolg hardly opened his eyes and sat up in bed, his body still heavy with sleep. He looked around his small room, taking in the familiar sight of his bed, desk, and wardrobe. It had been his home for as long as he could remember, and he felt a sense of comfort in the routine of it all.
He stumbled over to the sink in the corner of his room, splashing some cold water on his face to wake himself up. As he dried his face, he caught a glimpse of his reflection in the small mirror above the sink. He noticed the dark circles under his brown eyes and the dark brown messy hair that stuck up in all directions, a sign of a restless night.
Erfolg quickly got dressed in his jumpsuit, feeling the familiar fabric against his skin. Before leaving his room, Erfolg reached for the carbon-pendant necklace on his bedside table. It was a family heirloom, passed down from his deceased mother.
Erfolg's stomach growled as he surveyed the small piece of bread left over from the night before. It was stale and dry, but he knew he couldn't afford to waste a single crumb. With a sigh, he took a hesitant bite, feeling the gritty texture of the bread against his tongue.
He finished the last of the bread and washed it down with a sip of lukewarm water from the cup on his desk. It wasn't much, but it would have to do for breakfast. In a world where food was scarce and resources were limited, Erfolg knew he was lucky to have anything to eat at all.
As he gathered his things and prepared to leave his room, Erfolg felt ready to face the day ahead. He grabbed his bag and headed towards the door, taking a deep breath before opening it and stepping out into the hallway.
Right after Erfolg emerged from his dwelling, his eyes adjusted to the dimly lit surroundings. The walls of his dwelling were made of thick, rusted steel plates, and the air was thick with the smell of fuel and smoke. As he stepped out onto the grime-covered metal platform, he took in the view of the bustling, district that lay before him.
The buildings that surrounded him were towering structures made of metal and concrete, their surfaces covered in a thick layer of grime and rust. The sound of clanking machinery and steam hissing from pipes filled the air, drowning out the faint hum of distant engines. Despite the darkness that enveloped the underground city, the glow of gas lamps and the flames of furnaces and torches illuminated the narrow streets and alleys.
As Erfolg made his way through the crowded district streets, he couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the district's inhabitants. The people moved about their daily lives with purpose, their faces grim and determined.
Despite the harsh conditions of this underground district, Erfolg found himself fascinated by the energy and resilience of its inhabitants. And as he made his way deeper into the labyrinthine streets, he finally made his way to the Quest board, determined to find work and earn some money for the day. The job board was a large bulletin board where people could post tasks that needed to be done and pay for them.
As he scanned the quest postings, Erfolg saw a variety of tasks ranging from hunting and maintenance to more specialized work like traveling escort and medical assistance. But one job posting, in particular, caught his eye - "Glowing Worm Gatherer Needed".
Curious and intrigued, Erfolg made his way to the location listed on the posting, which was the potato farm. There, he met with the farmer, who explained that the glowing worms were a valuable source of light and were used to supply the light for the potato farm.
The farmer pointed towards the map, his calloused finger stretching towards the location. "The glowing worm is in there, right through the west tunnel of this district," he said, his voice gruff with authority. He leaned in closer to Erfolg, his breath warm against his ear. "But be careful, son. That cave is full of dangers, and the worm won't be easy to catch." Erfolg nodded, his heart pounding with anticipation and fear.
Erfolg's footsteps echoed through the dark, damp tunnel as he made his way toward the cave. The air was thick with the smell of wet earth, and the sound of dripping water echoed off the walls. As he drew closer to the entrance, he could see a faint, pulsing light emanating from within. His heart quickened with excitement as he stepped into the cavern, his eyes adjusting to the dim glow. The walls were slick with moisture, and the ground was uneven and rocky under his feet. The sound of his breathing filled his ears as he moved closer to the source of the light, his heart pounding with anticipation.
As Erfolg's eyes adjusted to the dim light of the cavern, he saw a faint blue glow emanating from a mushroom growing out of the cave wall. The delicate cap pulsated with an otherworldly light, casting an eerie blue glow that danced across the walls. But his attention was quickly drawn to a faint white light that flickered in the distance. With each step, the light grew stronger until he came upon a small, wriggling form. The glowing worm writhed and twisted, casting a faint glow on the ground around it. Erfolg's heart raced with excitement as he reached out to capture the elusive creature, his fingers trembling with anticipation.
Erfolg carefully placed the glowing worm into his bag, a sense of satisfaction washing over him. He had thought the task would be harder, but he had succeeded in capturing the elusive creature. As he turned to leave the cave, the ground beneath his feet began to tremble. At first, he thought it was his imagination, but then the rocks began to shift and tumble around him. Panic surged through his body as he realized the danger he was in. The cave was collapsing, and he was trapped. The walls groaned and creaked, the sound deafening in his ears. Erfolg's heart raced as he searched for a way out, but the exit was blocked by a pile of debris. He was trapped, and time was running out.
As Erfolg frantically searched for an escape, a deafening roar filled the air. The ground beneath him trembled with each heavy footstep, and he knew that he was not alone. He turned to face his attacker and saw a massive worm-like creature erupt from the ground. Its jagged teeth glinted in the dim light, and its bulbous eyes fixated on Erfolg with a hunger that made his blood run cold. Without a second thought, he turned and ran, the creature's thunderous footsteps echoing in his ears. Erfolg's heart raced as he sprinted towards the exit, his breath coming in ragged gasps. But the creature was fast, and Erfolg knew that it was only a matter of time before it caught up with him.
With the creature hot on his heels, Erfolg's hand instinctively went to touch the carbon-pendant necklace he wore around his neck. A surge of energy pulsed through his body, and he felt his composition shift as he turned into carbon. His body became lighter, and he felt his muscles ripple with newfound strength. He picked up speed, his feet pounding the ground with each step. The creature roared in frustration as Erfolg gained distance, its massive form struggling to keep up with his newfound speed. With each passing moment, Erfolg felt more in control, and faster.
Finally, he reached an intersection of the tunnel and skidded to a stop. He looked left and right, trying to decide which way to go. To his left, was the way he passed before from the district, a place he knew was filled with people. To his right, the path was shrouded in darkness, an unknown and unfamiliar territory he had never been to before. He knew that whichever way he chose, there was no turning back. Fear and doubt crept into his mind, but he pushed them aside. He was determined to make it out alive, no matter what.
As Erfolg ran towards his chosen path, he suddenly felt a hand on his mouth, muffling his gasp of surprise. He spun around, his heart pounding in his chest, and came face to face with a mysterious girl in a robe who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. She looked at him with piercing eyes, her finger pressed against her lips in a gesture of silence. Erfolg's mind raced with questions, but he could not speak. The girl's touch was gentle but firm, and he knew that he had no choice but to obey her. He looked at her, his eyes pleading for answers, but all he received was a silent stare.
The mysterious girl removed her hand from Erfolg's mouth and beckoned him to follow her. She moved with fluid grace, disappearing into the shadows with ease. Erfolg hesitated for a moment, unsure of whether he could trust her. But something in her eyes made him feel a glimmer of hope, a sense that she might be able to help him. With a deep breath, he took off after her, his feet pounding against the cave floor. Despite the danger that lurked in the shadows, Erfolg felt a sense of calm wash over him. He trusted this girl, even though he didn't know who she was or where she was taking him. All he knew was that he had to follow her if he wanted to survive.
