But Rose couldn't hear him. The feeling had returned. She felt stuck in a bubble and she couldn't get out. She couldn't breathe again.

She was shaking again.

- Okay I'll get you home

- No. Zoe… I need to find Zoe

He held her hands.

Hunter smiled. He knew the meaning.

- Okay. Dragonflies it is. The waterfall, us running around. Mom .

She closed her eyes . She could smell Lorelais perfume. She could see the dragonflies.

She took out her phone, took off its case and took the note out.

She held it in her hand and repeated the words written on it. Her breathing came back to normal again.

- You okay?

- Yes.

She hugged him.

- Now what on Earth is going on?

- Today when we were trapped, Irene let it slip that Zoe..she uh…. She hurt herself.

- What? Hurt how?

- Her wrists..

- No, let's just find her first

- How? Where would she go?

- How did Irene know where she was?

- Maybe the hospital called her

- They wouldn't unless Zoe wanted them too and she wouldn't

Rose thought hard about it.

- Yeah she has a key hidden somewhere and besides she has no money, no friends. That's the best place for her to crash.

They rushed to the car. Rose's heart was beating fast. She really hoped to find her there, passed out on the couch as always.

- Don't worry I'm sure she's fine

- I'm afraid we won't find anything and unless she's there I don't even know where we can look

- You haven't spoken to her for the last four years?

- No, haven't even heard about her. Figured we were both better off

Rose prayed she would. She didn't know where else she could look for her.

She thought about how she had dreamed of her mother being clean and being there for her.

She wanted a relationship with her mom just like the one she had with Lorelei and that Lorelei had with the boys, and Anne with Allison.

"Maybe this is it " she said to herself. Maybe she had tried leaving and having failed she had started a new chapter. Maybe this was their chance.

But she knew. If it was, she would never return to the house in Pine Hills.

Hunter's voice brought her back to reality

She jumped out of the car and opened the door of the house.

- Let me go first

Hunter wasn't sure one of her abusive boyfriends wasn't there

She nodded.

It was pitch black

They walked to the front door. It was unlocked.

- I don't think she's here

- No. She could be passed out

They walked into her room. Hunter froze.

There was a little moonlight peering in and she could see stains on the bed.

- Let's just get out

- Why?

- Please just… just wait outside.

- Hunter. What is it?

She pushed him aside

She saw the same thing

She ran to the bedside. Hunter turned around looking for the light switch

- Nooooo ! Mom. Nooo please please please

Rose saw her hands. They were cold. She tried to find a rag around and wrapped them.

- Mom come on please please

She was shaking and sobbing

Hunter turned on the light.

She was wearing her daisy dress.

Hunter approached her. He checked her pulse. There was none.

He took out his phone and called an ambulance.

Rose looked down , in the ground was her painting of her and her mom in the dress.

Blood had dripped down to where the sun was before.

- Rose. let's get you outside

- No. She'll wake up. She does this sometimes… she… she takes longer to wake up… but she always does..

- Rose..there's no pulse

- No she will …. She has to

Please mom. Please !

Hunter took her by her arms.

- Please Rose let's just wait outside for the ambulance

Rose's hands and sweatshirts had bloodstain all over.

- No. let go of me

She said and pushed him.

His hoodie got blood on it too.

- I wrapped her wrists. She'll be okay.

She got up and laid in the bed next to Zoe.

- You'll be okay mom

She put her head on her mother's chest.

She never got to hear her heartbeat.

- I'm here mom

Hunter started crying.

He got in the hall and called Noah.

The phone rang a little then he picked up.

- Where are you guys?

- Here in Pine Hill

- At the roof?

- No. We're at Zoe's . You need to get here

- Are you crying?

- Just get here please.

- We're on our way.

Noah was freaking out.

- What ? what is it?

Allison asked.

- We have to get to Zoe's

- Zoe's? why?

- Connor! Aliyah!!

They ran into the room

- We need to leave

Hunter was waiting for them at the front door. The lights were on now. He was sitting down his head on his knees.

They burst through the yard door and ran towards him.

He got up

Noah saw the blood stains.

- Oh God! Oh God! Where is she? Is that… is that..?

He felt out of breath. He rushed to get through the front door.

Hunter stopped him.

- No. Noah calm down. It's not her! It's Zoe!

He ran inside.

- I called an ambulance. She needs him right now.

- Is she…?

Aliyah asked already crying.

He shook his head.

They gasped.

She hugged him.

He hugged her back.

Noah ran to the room.

Zoe lay there covered in blood. Her wrists were wrapped in a white cloth. Rose was lying beside her with her head on her mother's chest.

He sat down near the bed.

- I'm so sorry.

He said.

Once more there wasn't anything he could do but watch her be in pain.

Tears ran down his cheeks.

He sat there and said nothing. He didn't try to move her. He didn't try to get her out.

Soon they heard the sirens.

- They'll take her won't they?

She asked.

- Yes

He replied trying to hold back his tears

- Okay

She said. She kissed her mother's cheek and got up.

She picked the drawing up.

She walked outside.

She sat opposite the front door.

They all watched her. The paramedics and the police arrived.

She sat there holding the painting watching in distance. As Jack talked to the police. Hunter had woken him up not sure of how to handle it all.

Rose just watched form the distance as they did what they had to and then took her away.

The others sat down by her side too.

They stayed there silent as she held the drawing to her chest.

- I'm sorry..

Aliyah said, not sure if that would mean anything right now.

Rose didn't reply.

She felt numb. Now she truly was all alone. All alone with her mother's blood all over her.

She felt anger rage through her yet she couldn't move, she wanted to light the world on fire, she wanted it to explode into smithereens, she wanted it to stop and for everyone to feel the stabbing feeling she did. But it all stayed still and nobody but her felt the pain.

Jack approached them.

- Hey kid

Why don't the girls get you cleaned up ?

She didn't say anything. Didn't move. Just held the drawing tighter.

Noah put his jacket over her

- Come on, let's go

He said taking her arm.

She stayed silent and got up.

They walked to door. Half of Pine Hills was already there. Anne ran through them to Rose.

She cried and hugged her tight.

- I'm so sorry baby. So sorry. I am really sorry.

She kissed Roses head.

- Lets just get here home

Jack told Anne as the whispering of the crowd became louder and he didn't want Rose to hear the comments and questions.

- We'll just go to Mr.P , she'll feel better there

Noah said because he knew Rose needed to be in familiar surroundings now more than ever and Anne feared Allison's reaction so she nodded in approval.
