The Lonely Plains (2)
The nights were the hardest. When the sky turned dark and the stars blinked into existence, the plains transformed into a different kind of wilderness. The vastness that seemed almost welcoming in the daylight became oppressive. The silence was profound, broken only by the distant calls of nocturnal beasts. I made camp where the tall grass were scarce and lit a ill-advised fire under the open sky, I was really cold so I didn't really care about the consequences. The firelight flickering around me as I huddled beneath my cloak for warmth. the flames offering little comfort against the chill that seeped into my bones. The stars overhead twinkled like they knew some secret I wasn't privy to, and for a moment, I wondered if they were mocking me.
