Op Rooppur VIII: The betrayer

Naser enters his room and quickly takes out his phone. He calls someone and starts talking.

"Hello. It's me...Why did you make me send my friends to a warzone? You knew what was going on there, didn't you?.....What?.....Did you want to kill my friends just for that? I'm done working for you. Don't call me back ever."

Naser cuts the phone. He throws the phone on the bed, walks up to the mini fridge and takes out a soda can.

"Get one for me too?"

Naser gets startled and drops the can.He runs to the switchboard and turns on the light.He turns around and sees Sohel sitting in the room's couch aiming his silenced XM17 pistol at Naser.

"What? Come on. Get some soda. Let's sit down and have a chat.",says Sohel. Naser tries to smile.He walks 2-3 steps closer to Sohel and says, "Sohel? Dude? What are you doing? Why are you aiming a gun at me? What did I do?"

"Don't play dumb with me?We both know what you did.I was already having a hard time trying to figure out why you would involve yourselves with NWO but you even put your friends lives at risk? Do we even count as your friend?"

Naser gives up and goes back and picks up the soda can.He takes another can out of the fridge and comes to Sohel.He hands him one then goes and sits on the couch in front of Sohel.Sohel puts the gun in the tea table and pops the can.He takes a sip and looks at Naser.

"So? Why did you do all these?"

"What other choice did I have? After we got out of college you guys all went your different ways.You and Mitali joined the Army. Tahmid and Ovi also settled for good. But what did I do? Even with all my achievements I couldn't get a job. All because of these conflicts. On my days wandering through the streets looking for a job and running from loan sharks I met a man. He said he would give me a good job if I helped them a little after I got the job."

"And then you got the job at the atomic research facility."

"Yes. A few months after the job they kept asking me for many different kinds of documents.At first it wasn't anything serious so I complied. But 4 months ago I was transferred to the Rooppur nuclear power plant. Since then they kept asking me for various classified documents. Like security details. Routine of Uranium shipments etc. I tried to decline their orders but they threatened to expose me to the authorities. If they did that not only would I be removed from the job but I would have even gone to jail for treason."

"The situation wouldn't be any better now you know? Even though you were forced you still betrayed the country...…... .One last question before I call the police. Did you still consider us your friends these 2 days?"

"Of course. You guys always were and will be my friends."

"Then why did you send them to a freakin battlefield?"

"I didn't know about it.I just did what I was told to do."

Sohel lets out a big sigh.

"I really wished I didn't have to do this. You know when I arrived at Dhaka I only came to meet you all. But then I got a call when I was at your house. That's when I got to know about your connection to NWO. I really didn't want to believe that. But you kept making my belief stronger and stronger. You kept an eye on me from the start didn't you? You searched through my bag at your house,Installed spyware in my hotel room. Even stole my weapon. You leave me with no other choice."

Sohel takes out his phone and dials a number, "Hello. Yeah you guys can come in now."

Naser gets nervous. He runs to the closet and takes out a XM7 rifle. He aims the rifle at Sohel and says, "I won't go down. Let me go,Sohel. Just this once. We are friends aren't we?" Sohel also aims his pistol at Naser. He looks upset and sad. Just then OC Das enters the room with 4 policemen. Seeing the situation all of them also aim the rifle at Naser. At that time All of their other friends had entered the room too. Naser looks more nervous than before. Tahmid screams, "what are both of you doing?" None of them answer him. Naomi and Jacob tried to go and help Sohel but he signaled them to stop. He also signals the policemen to lower their weapons.

Sohel slowly starts walking towards Naser. He holsters his pistol too. Naser's face gets more and more scared as Sohel gets to him. He also walks back one step at a time. He screams, "Don't come. Let me go. I will shoot,Sohel. Don't come near me."

Sohel says, "Come on. Shoot me. I dare you."

As Sohel gets close to him Naser pulls the trigger. But to his surprise no bullets came out. Sohel gets to him and pulls the rifle by barrel. He says to Naser, "You forgot to turn the safety off." Naser tries to punch Sohel but he dodges the punch and with a small right hook in Naser's jaw he drops unconscious.
