Chapter 67: Decision

After breakfast, Rafe convinced me that we needed to get out of the cabin. We had seen flyers for the weekly farmers market when we were in town, and he wanted to send another text to Carruthers. It was safer to do that away from the cabin than in it.

The market was on the town green, a space smaller than a football field. Rafe and I wandered from table to stall, tasting honey, eating samples of freshly baked bread and checking out the vegetables.

A small booth next to the homemade soap booth caught my eye. The woman was elderly, dressed in faded overalls, a plaid shirt and a straw hat. The table in front of her was spread with jewelry.

“Good morning,” she greeted us as we passed. “Aren’t you a beautiful couple?”

I flushed; I wasn’t sure what Rafe would think of us being labeled a couple when he hadn’t made his feelings for me clear yet. But he just pulled me tight against his side and smiled.

“Well, she’s beautiful.” He kissed the top of my head. “I’m just an appreciator.”
