Chapter 59: Friends

Before I could do it, though, I heard footsteps as Rafe walked into the kitchen. I closed my eyes, listening to the cabinet door open, the sound of a plate being set on the counter, a drawer sliding out ... he was making a sandwich. I wanted to tell him to eat the eggs he’d made that morning, but it didn’t seem a good lead-off for a reconciliation.

I expected him to take his food and go back into the bedroom, but instead, the screen door creaked open as he leaned out.

“Are you hungry? Because I made a couple of sandwiches. If you want one.”

I stared out into the twilight. “I could eat.”

“Cool.” The door slammed shut, and then a few minutes later, he came out with the plates. He handed me one and sat down on the step, balancing the food on his knees.

We ate in silence, but it wasn’t the thick, painful quiet from earlier.
