Chapter 58: I feel the earth move

The ground trembling, and I couldn’t hold on. But that was all right, because someone had to stop her, and right now, that someone was me. I had to keep her from killing Rafe, from tearing down Harper Creek and destroying the people who cared for me.

I closed my eyes and concentrated on calm. I pushed against the ground, trying to keep it stable.

The cabin settled with one final groan, and then it was still.

Rafe came out into the living room, frowning at me. “What the hell was that?”

I shrugged. “A nightmare. Sorry. I didn’t mean to ...” I waved my hand in the air. “Shake everything up.”

He rubbed his jaw. “Not exactly how I wanted to wake up.”
