Chapter 51: Checking out the cabin

Rafe slept solid for the rest of the trip, not even stirring when I stopped for gas at two different far-off-the-road gas stations. I was circling us closer to our real destination, but I couldn’t risk buying a map, even at the podunk gas-and-go shops where I picked up food and other supplies a little bit at a time. Instead, I pulled into rest areas every few hours and stood in front of the huge laminated maps, studying them and trying to memorize the roads that would lead us to some rest.

“Witchcraft and telekinesis, my ass. What I need is a didactic memory.”

If we had driven the direct route, I figured it would have taken us about seven hours to reach the safe house I’d chosen. Instead it was closing in on twelve hours of driving when I pulled off a tiny one-lane road and stopped the car on the shoulder.

“Are we there?”

I hadn’t heard Rafe stir, but he was leaning toward me, propped on his one good arm.
