Chapter 50: Perilous drive

I didn’t know where those last words had come from. I didn’t care if Rafe trusted me or not; I had a job to do, and he was it.

His eyes met mine, flat and expressionless. “Does it matter? Do I have a choice?”

“Actually, no. You don’t.” I started the car and backed out. “But I’ll tell you anyway. Keeping you safe is my assignment, and I’m one of those annoying people who always gets her own way.”

“Are you from Carruthers? Did ... Cathryn send you?”

I glanced into the rearview as we merged back onto the interstate. “Yes. Cathryn and Zoe. They’re the only ones who knew I was coming for you.” Which reminded me. I hadn’t texted them. I had been so intent on getting away, it had slipped my mind.

Rafe was quiet for so long that I figured he had gone back to sleep or passed out again. Wrapped in my own worries, I jumped when he spoke.

“You should have left me there. They were going to finish me off this morning.”
