Jesse didn’t even know if his fear was unreasonable. It seemed the part of his brain dedicated to those sorts of judgments had shut down, and now Jesse was just left with fear. Reasonable. Unreasonable. Logical. Illogical. They were utterly meaningless words. He could have asked Emma about Gideon. Maybe he had? If pressed, he would say he had several conversations with Emma, but if pressed, he would also say he had abandoned his body a dozen times to fly over the city.
It was better to sleep, anyway. Better for his body if he gave it the chance to heal. Better for his mind, so he couldn’t dwell. Better for his nerves, which were raw and sore and needed time, or he was likely to cry for no reason and wince every time somebody moved toward him.
