Chapter 14

“Mama, when the time is right for me to go back to school, I will. In fact, being married might actually help because I wouldn’t have to worry about taking on a whole lot of student loans since I will have someone to help with bills.”

“Humph,” my mother said as I emerged with a turkey and cranberry sauce on wheat masterpiece and sat down on the couch beside her. The topic of conversation changed from my upcoming wedding to how I needed to start watching what I ate since I looked like I put on weight. Ah, it is good to be home.

Ten hours after this ‘welcome home’ conversation, I drove to Rocky Mount to pick up my lighter half, as I called her, from the train station. Since she lived in Charlotte where she worked as a city planner, she could have driven home, but my sister loves making an entrance.

As my sister and I laid eyes on each other in the middle of the station, we repeated the same conversation we have every time we saw each other after a time apart.

“What’s up, Yo?”
