“Akira made me.” Jade’s face turned red.
“I’m proud of you. Thank you. I have to get back to work and should be home after one if the city holds together.” Rosey moved to Akira. “Our relationships have changed somewhat, but I hope we’ll still befriends regardless. You can ask or tell me anything. You’re still welcome to stay the night.”
Akira gave Rosey a gentle hug, wary of the badge, gun, and other gear. “Thanks.”
Jade brought Akira a toothbrush, jammies and a nighty, and hot tea. “It always helps me sleep, along with a stiff shot of whiskey.”
Akira worked up a playful glare. “Bad girl.”
“Mom replaced the whiskey with super sweet iced tea.”
“And you know that because—”
Jade pouted as well as any ten-year-old. “I want an attorney.”
They hugged goodnight, and after using the bathroom, Akira fell into bed in the guest bedroom, emotionally drained. She half sat up, took a few sips of tea, and gratefully fell asleep.
