Before the group could rest, they felt the earth shaking. The people in Gate City were all startled, while the patrollers sounded the bells, informing them of an imminent attack.
The Black Tiger Army started to march towards the walls. The imposing manner they carried with them almost suffocated the people in the city as they watched. A good portion of the Dragon Army was already mobilized outside the gates for defense. Soon, more soldiers came out of Gate City and joined the other soldiers.
Caol felt the fighting intent in the air. 'So this is what a battlefield looks like. The resolve to destroy the opposing forces.' Caol, along with the elites of the Soaring Dragon Regiment, watched atop the watchtower as the Tiger Army came near.
General Yang was in front of them, watching every movement of the Tiger Army. He called one of his aides and commanded some things to him, "Have 80,000 people branch off more to the left. Put more archers by their sides too. The right wing needs to advance forward ten meters. Have the spearmen go in front and pan out. The enemy cavalry is on that side. Have the ballistae ready!"
The aide accepted the order and went to the commanding officers outside the gates. They followed the command and immediately acted on it. Caol and the elite group were watching the whole maneuvers. A lot of tactics needed to be made, and it will be harder for their side as they are overwhelmed by numbers. Good thing they had the walls and a long, deep trench dug earlier, separating them from the enemies.
The soldiers participating in the battlefield were in the millions. The Dragon Army only had about 750,000 soldiers while the Tiger Army had more than a million. The Dragon Army needed to depend upon the support from their archers and ballistae to overcome the enemy population.
Soon, when the Tiger Army was about 800 meters away from the city and its range, they stopped.
Everything seemed to stop at this moment. It was awfully peaceful. It was so silent that you can hear the breeze from the air.
It was not long before the Tiger Army started their attack. The enemy general already prepared for the trench and brought massive amounts of talismans. They obviously got this from the immortal sects. The soldiers at the front released their qi into the talismans before throwing it on the trench. Immediately, the ground miraculously 'grew' and the trench was no longer seen. At this point, the massive Tiger Army was already running towards the city.
Feng shook his head, "Tsk, the trench was easily disposed and the people's efforts were wasted that fast. I did not think they would prepare for that by easily using talismans."
"Do you think the soldier's efforts to build the trench was useless?" Caol suddenly asked Feng a question.
Feng nodded his head, "Of course, it was meant to be reduce their numbers for a bit, and it was easily disposed."
Caol shook his head, "I don't think so. They used quite a lot of talismans just to get rid of the trench. Talismans can only be made by immortal practitioners, and they cost a fortune to procure the materials needed. In my eyes, the trench was made to dispose the talismans instead. Think about it, who wasted a lot more? A mortal's efforts or an immortal's handiwork?"
General Yang heard this and secretly nodded. Caol used his brains and found the trick quickly. He ordered the trench to be made just for that purpose, as he already knew who the enemy general was. This general was known to do whatever it takes just to win the enemy forces.
General Yang knew that a trench would be of no use, and it was easily done if thousands of people worked together. He wanted to use it as a decoy of some sort to waste some of their resources.
Feng heard this and was shocked. Apparently, he did not think things through. Feng thought that it would only be smashing skulls and cutting necks in the battlefield.
Caol continued to watch as the Tiger Army was near. Archers on top of the walls started firing a barrage of arrows. There were at least 40,000 archers on the wall, firing repeatedly. At the side of the Tiger Army, thousands of people were impaled in different body parts by the arrows, but they still kept on going. Mortals died without a doubt, but most soldiers were martial practitioners. Their physiques were stronger by a lot. If they defended their vital spots, an arrow or two would not be lethal.
The spearmen at the front gripped their weapons tighter as they saw the enemy coming at them rapidly.
The close combat started not too long after. People were getting squashed, killed, stomped on, and a lot more. It was very chaotic.
Caol held his breath as this scene was branded into his mind.
*Thump thump*
Caol heard his heart beating faster. It was a mix of nervousness and excitement. He wanted to go down there and participate. Caol knew that this was his Saiyan blood reacting, exciting him, enticing him to battle and kill to his heart's content. He unknowingly clenched his fists hard that he did not know blood was dropping from it. Caol was holding himself back, and it was hard. Way too hard.
General Yang gave Caol a side glance, looking at his fists. He just shrugged and continued to watch the battlefield.
By this time, Caol noticed his wound too. He immediately opened his palms and just relaxed. Soon, the wound was closing rapidly. This can be attributed to his physique's greater restorative power.
There were already a lot of dead soldiers at this time. The archers were still not stopping. The soldiers on the ground slashed, hacked, stabbed, and bashed their enemies. It was a very blood-boiling action.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a huge group of enemy soldiers could be seen ravaging their way through. It was an elite force!
It was only for a few seconds but they killed hundreds of people.
General Yang furrowed his brow before commanding a fast response against that group. He only had two elite forces right now, and one was supposed to guard the city when intruders came. General Yang set his eyes upon Caol and asked him, "Can you deal with those people?" He pointed the enemy's elite group to Caol.
Caol looked at the enemy before looking at General Yang. He only said two words, "Yes, sir!" Caol had a look of confidence on his face.
General Yang ordered him, "Take your group and meet those enemies. I want no one alive. Do you hear me?"
"Yes, sir!" The Soaring Dragon Regiment collectively answered. They did a military salute before heading outside the gates.
Before they went out, Caol stepped in front of them. He was the Captain of this group. They were all young, ranging from 14 years old to 19 years old. Caol looked into every single one's eyes before uttering a line. "Keep yourselves alive."
Caol went ahead, followed by the group, and started to meet their adversary.
