King Atticus's condition had not improved despite all the treatment the doctors and mages had given him. He knew that his time was running out, and he began to consider his options for the throne. In the kingdom of YHÀKADÉI, the throne did not pass down from parent to child but was instead chosen mysteriously by YHÀKADÉI throne itself. Sometimes YHÀKADÉI would choose an heir, but not always. The kingdom's laws allowed for anyone to become king or queen, regardless of their background.
If the heir to the throne was female, the throne usually chose her to become the next ruler. However, it was unlikely that the throne would choose a female who was already part of the royal family, as this would mean that she would not have the opportunity to marry and produce an heir of her own. The throne often chose someone outside the royal family, in order to ensure the line of succession remained strong.
