Chapter 8

"Juliet. I told you not to come here. Stop bothering us when we are working. Put your claws away; she is one of us. Christa, let me introduce my younger sister Juliet Bush. She just turned eighteen and shifted a few days ago. "Solomon reaches forward and throws his arms around his little sister.

Juliet Bush has short brown hair and a pale complexion; she is about five feet and five inches, the same height as Christa. Her eyes are still red as she tries to pull back her hands.

"It is so nice to meet you. I am Christa, and I just begin to shift this month. Maybe you could be my teacher." Christa is always kind to strangers; being raised in an intellectual family and receiving an excellent education. She thinks it's only common courtesy.

"You are too old to be a student. Why is she here? "Juliet fixed the lady who said hello to her with a hostile glare. Soon Juliet gets rid of her brother and jumps into Evan.

"Don't be rude, Juliet. Please forgive her, Christa." Soloman asks for Christa's forgiveness. Christa shakes her hand to show that she doesn't mind at all; while Evan sits on the sofa, saying nothing.

"Evan. I miss you so much. You said that when I am an adult, you would consider of have me as your sex partner. Why are you never coming to see me after my birthday?" Juliet holds on to Evan's arm, losing herself in the scent.

Juliet was rather like a koala herself in appearance; you can't dislodge a koala once it's got a hold of something. Evan keeps giving a quick blink, but Christa ignores his distress signals.

"Haha, you've got it wrong. Juliet. I have found my mate. I believe you will find yours soon." Evan appears embarrassed and ill at ease with Juliet's words. He put her hands away and gestures to Solomon to precede her from the room.

"Juliet, I have something important to tell you. Come with me, please." Solomon disregards his sister's claim completely and carries her out of the room. Juliet puts up a last-ditch struggle, but her strength has melted.

That was an embarrassing situation for Christa; she could feel her face reddening with awkwardness. Evan, by contrast, is used to receiving admiring offers from women. In this instance, the best solution is to get back to what they were saying before they were interrupted.

"Funny girl. Evan, we should get into business right now. I need to tell you about what happened in the secret facility." Christa has been waiting for over an hour and is beginning to feel irritable.

The memory of yesterday still haunts her. Christa flashed on the pictures she had visualized in her husband's study room last evening. It isn't every day that you see humans and wolfs bloodily murdered, and cut into pieces in records.

A collection of the body parts stuffed, labeled, and systematically arranged for use in her husband's hobby. It was too bad she didn't take the photos as evidence because Lewis was back on time. Christa could still feel the taste of blood in her throat made her want to vomit.

Christa knew better now that she had to save herself from a serial killer; she fell into a depression for loving someone like Lewis. And for the unspeakable magic reason, she had to marry Lewis and stayed with him exactly like in her previous life.

"Why didn't you just cancel the wedding and leave him for good? If you are still in love with Lewis, what you are doing now doesn't make any sense. Christa." Evan shows concern.

"Evan. I can't tell you more, but trust me. I am on your side. I loved Lewis once, but not anymore. Now I only cared about how to save lives from him. I think Lewis is performing secret genetic experiments on both werewolves and humans. Books and research about genes and male fecundity are everywhere in his study room. I took a photo for some of the books, but this is not my major, so I don't quite understand it. Do you want to have a look?" Christa shows the photos on her mobile.

"Seriously? If he wants to become a werewolf, he could ask one of us to bite him to transform him or..." Evan doesn't finish the sentence because he sees the expression on Christa's face.

"You know the reason; you are trying to hide something." Evan grabs her hand; in a deadly serious tone.

"Because Lewis was sterile. I am guessing he knew about werewolves by accident; he might think there was a way to create a baby of his own." Christa stares at the door with a vacant expression on her face.

"Oh, you know it and you still marry him. Wow, now you are saying you want to save lives? Are you kidding me?" Evan lets go of her.

Evan wonders why his mate would change so much in one day. Almost a year ago, he knew Christa was his mate the first time he met her at the university celebration; even flowers specially flown in couldn't beat her beauty. But she was engaged to someone.

Back then, she was so alive and happily in love with Lewis; Evan could pick up her wonderful scent; it was like climbing roses wafting through the window. Now her scent is like rotten leaves choking in the pond, not pleasant for humans maybe, but good enough for him.

"If he needs them for research, it means they are still alive, right?" Evan speaks in a low mumble, as if to himself.

"I don't know; I am sorry. It takes too long. I have classes this afternoon. Got to go now." Christa didn't mention the pictures that horrified her. Not be a good liar; she has to avoid being caught thinking about the pictures.

"Sure, if you don't have class tomorrow or the day after, you could come here to practice your wolf ability; just ring me. " Evan leads her into the woods. On the way back, Evan detoured to teach Christa how to pick up the scent by finding the way to the house.

It only took a week for Christa to know how to train her wolf ability. During the days she didn't call Lewis or Louisa or went to the hospital to see Lewis at once; she had been cut adrift from everything she had known. At the same time, she became friends with Evan and Soloman.

Some problems must be solved step by step; through investigation and study. The facts and correct inferences only came to light after a long, careful investigation and analysis; Christa developed a set of theories.

Fact one, her best friend Louisa is helping Lewis hide something from her. To think about it, what had happened the day she died in her last life might be a trap too. Both her husband and her best friend were full of crap. Christa suspected that Louisa knew about the secret research center.

Fact two, Christa checked the ins and outs of the hotel room Lewis kept for himself without telling anyone. It turned out Lewis himself never took girls or anyone into the room, but his best friend Cornelius Longman often carried girls or men into the room. Cornelius was an accomplice.

Fact three, what Christa couldn't change in the Reborn life may lead to her death. Last time the experience was quite pleasant, but as she lived again on the same life journey, it was a detestable ordeal.

The only upside to this might be that she had met Evan; with his help, she didn't feel lonely or isolated this time. Christa summarized her findings very neatly when they met together on Friday.

"Sorry I didn't get to see the documents again. I looked everywhere in the house; Lewis must have moved them to another place I didn't know. "Christa recalls that day as speaking.

After she had the talk with Evan on Monday, she went back to the study room again in the evening. But when she opened the door, all the books, files, and pictures were gone without a trace. Christa searched their bedroom, Lewis's playroom, and even the basement; found nothing. At last, she was convinced that Lewis had already transferred the evidence from the house to another safe location.

"It was not your fault. Prudent people are not going to take a leap in the dark. At least we now know what is happening and who the enemy is. Ever since my sister had been missing, this is the first time I am so close to the truth." Evan tries to manage a smile.

"What happened to her?" Christa is intrigued.

"Her name was Judy Moffy; she always craved the outside world. That day was her 20th birthday; she wanted to go out for a drink in a club, so I covered for her, but she never went back since that day. That's why I fled from the pack to look for her." Evan says in a sad voice.

"Solomon, what is your story? Don't tell me that Judy Moffy is your mate." Christa tries to change the subject by seeing how upset Evan is.

"Of course not. After Evan flees from the pack, some of the wolves are missing. So I went out to find them, and Evan found me first about four months ago. We heel the trail of their whereabouts, mostly two places- the hotel and the secret research center." Soloman pauses.

At this moment in time, a single shot rang out. A look of terror flashed across both Evan and Soloman's faces.

"Christa, I think you should leave now." Evan shows her the door.
