An old Box

Everyone's eyes lit up seeing new clothes.

The children were grinning from ear to ear after receiving all the gifts.

Felix then took out a box of chocolates which he brought and distributed them.

Samia looked at him. She was not knowing that he also brought something.

Felix looked at the kids who were so happy as if they received some kind of treasure.

He never thought that they would be happy just by the simplest things. He has seen kids throwing tantrums for all sorts of things.

Unknowingly he also smiled with them.

"I am going to meet the director. Are you coming with me?" Samia asked Felix who was playing with the children.

The director lived in the innermost room on the first floor.

She comes downstairs only when there is something important. She was already in her 80s after all.

"I will come with you," Felix replied.

They both went to the first floor.

"The director is a very kind old woman. She never married and always took care of the children like their own." Samia said.

Samia entered the room after knocking.

An old lady was lying lifelessly on the bed.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Samia.

"You're here. I was waiting for you." Ms. Oliveira said.

"How are you feeling? They don't bother you too much, do they?" Samia asked while taking a seat on the chair next to her bed. She said Felix to sit on the other chair before introducing him.

"He's my friend Felix."

Oliveira looked back and forth between them with a look of understanding.

"Ah I understand, you both are friends." She said teasingly.

Oliveira then said in a lower volume that only Samia could hear.

"You can't hide anything from this old lady's eyes. I haven't lived for so many years in vain. It's ok if you are shy."

Samia's face flushed after hearing her.

"What do you do young man." She asked Felix.

"I am a businessman," Felix replied respectfully.

Oliveira nodded approvingly.

She didn't see any contempt in his eyes for the house or anyone. He didn't look down on people with a lower social status than him. It's quite rare to see a rich person having this attitude.

She has seen many rich people in her life. A large portion of the orphanage's money comes from their charity after all, which they do to earn a name for themselves.

She tried to get up from the bed. Samia went to help her.

Oliveira went to the cupboard and came with two boxes with her.

She gave one box which looked very old to Samia and said " You can open it after I pass away."

Samia wanted to stop her from saying these things. But the old lady waved her hand. "I know my body best. And everyone has to die one day. I am not feeling sad about that."

She then looked at the second box with a grin."Young man, I don't have much to offer you."

"Please don't say that," Felix said.

Here take this. She gave the other box to Felix. Samia was very curious about the box Felix got. She nudged him to open that, and when he did she was shocked. It contained the toys she made when she was younger and her copies in which she wrote some stupid stuff.

It was embarrassing.

She tried to snatch away the box before Felix could see the contents inside. Sensing her intentions Felix closed the box and hid it under his arms. He had a teasing smile on his face as if saying 'Take it if you can.'

"Why did you give him all that stuff?" Samia complained.

Felix thought she looked quite cute while complaining.

Oliveira changed the topic, saving the young man.

"Do you remember Mrs. Paul?"

"Yeah, the lady who used to come quite often," Samia said.

"I am planning to give her my position. I am already so old. I can't handle work anymore. She is a nice person, she will take care of the children." Oliveira suggested.

"Everyone would be fine as long as it's your decision," Samia said. Everyone understood that she can't handle any workload.

"Try to visit them more often. Though they never say, they all miss you very much."

Samia nodded. She knew that and she will try to make up for that. Time doesn't come again and again. Regretting later won't change anything.

"I won't hinder your rest anymore." Samia stood up and bowed to the old lady followed by Felix.

They both came downstairs leaving the lady to rest.

Even when they came into the living room Samia's eyes were glued to the box in Felix's hand.

"One should not look at another person's thing," Felix said.

"Those are clearly mine." Samia protested.

She can't let him read those. She doesn't even remember what all she wrote but she was sure that he should not see them.

Samia puffed her cheeks and sat away from him.

Felix laughed at her reaction. She was adorable.

"I am not giving it to you, no matter how you act." Felix ran off to his car and locked it after putting the box in it.

"Hmph!" Samia refused to talk with him.

She started looking for cakes. She forgot about such an important item yesterday. She doesn't have time to be angry with him anymore.

Felix saw her frowning while looking at her phone so he peeked at what she was saying.

She was browsing through cakes, yet none of them seemed to catch her eyes.

"What flavor do you want," Felix asked.

"Everyone likes chocolate very much," Samia replied.

"Ok, leave the cake to me, you already did so many things, let me do this one please." Felix looked at her with a pleading expression.

"But…"

"No buts." Felix strode out after saying that.

He made a call, Samia couldn't hear what he say as he was standing at quite a distance from her, but she knew he was making arrangements for the cake.

Now it seemed like everything was arranged, she just need to prepare the food.
