Raising a Hero

She had only wanted to have a working marriage and a happy family. All of her efforts had been towards that goal. Despite that, her husband leaves her for another woman after the loss of her unborn child, and just as she starts to pick herself up, she dies in a car accident. But this isn't the end of her story. Her spirit is picked up by her brother. He happens to be a beginner god who needs help raising the hero who is supposed to save his fledgling world. Thinking he is offering her a long-sought-after opportunity to be a mother, she readily agrees, and he sends her down to his world with the gift of healing and a Methuselah grade body to aid her on her quest. She quickly finds her little boy and is overjoyed to have someone to love and baby at last. But this hero doesn't want her as his mother. He wants her as something else. Suggested for ages 14+. Chapter 191

Gus had been closely followed by his passel of kids, who watched from the back of Derrick's wagon as covertly as they could, which was none at all.

"Oh my gaaaaaawd, he's hugging her," I heard on the edge of my hearing once I'd come to some semblance of calm.

"Why are you acting surprised?"

"He never hugs me."

"Men don't hug."

"Men totally hug."

"Shut up!" said a third voice.

Too late. Gus had pulled away from me and was glaring past Derrick's hulking form towards the boys.

"Carl, what are they doing here?"

"Well, you didn't tell us to go away," said Carl with sort of sniff.

"Is your wife going to be okay?" said the little ginger boy. Kel stood beside him, her red eyes big and worried.

I rubbed at my eyes. "I'm sorry, I - I don't know why - "

"There's nothing to be fucking sorry for, it's that stupid she dragon's fault," said Gus.

I flinched at the venom, while the kids seemed to shrink.

"He said the big no-no word," hissed Kel.

"No shit," said the blond boy.
