THE DEAD OF AN INMATE

"Do you know him?" the first inmate asked Jax, who stood in an awkward position, as he was just picking up his plate and standing from his seat for the second time.

These few words brought Jax from his inner reverie and forced him to compose himself before nodding his head in denial indifferently, as he bit out a single word in reply.

"No."

The two inmates sitting across him shrugged at each other with an indescribable gaze in their eyes before shifting their attention back to eating their own lunch.

Jax left the dining hall with mixed emotions. He denied knowing anything about Garry when they asked him. In a way, he knew nothing about him and his answer was correct.

He needed to be low profile and shouldn't draw any unnecessary attention to himself until he succeeded in getting out of this dark prison.

It was way too dark for him!

But, something inside him said that this is just the beginning and there was much more to come in his way. And, Garry's words from last time wouldn't stop ringing in his ears, enhancing his uneasiness.

Thinking upto this, Jax decided that he should leave this place as soon as possible and with that thought in his mind, he hurriedly went in search of the superintendent in charge.

However, just as he was about to reach the office of the said officer, Jax heard some guards fussing over something in the corridor to his left.

Out of curiosity, he decided to take a look and his heel turned around to his left, leading to the mouth of that bustling corridor. Jax stood behind what seemed like the wall of some higher official's office around this corner, which was now almost empty as every single guard in the vicinity were busy watching something ahead of them.

After a few moments, a person in white coat, seemingly the prison doctor, came out of the door, out of which all the guards were standing, busy discussing something.

Following the doctor, were two guards, carrying a stretcher on both ends, fell in Jax's line of sight.

The person lying on the stretcher was covered in a white sheet from head to toe, meaning he was dead.

Jax cursed under his breath as he continued watching the scene unfold a few meters from where he was hiding.

He turned around and noticed that the neon name plate hanging outside the superintendent's office was dimmed, meaning he was unavailable for the time being.

How would someone be able to get access to the aforementioned officer, when he was busy dealing with the after procedures of a dead inmate?

Jax cursed his luck again. Why the hell was it always playing with his life?

Jax felt helplessness consume him, because the superintendent in charge wouldn't be available for the next fifteen days, for he just came after overseeing some police training sessions which was why, Jax was unable to meet him all these days.

And, now that he was going on a leave, Jax was stuck here for another fifteen days of no progress in his attempts.

Jax felt like screaming out of frustration when he saw the mortuary van leaving the infirmary, following the superintendent's vehicle.

Everything was working against him, even the death of a person.

Sh*t luck indeed!

Thinking about Garry, Jax didn't know whether he should feel pity for the dead man or himself, as that pitiful man rubbed some of his pathetic luck to his own sh*t luck.

However, Garry was a dead man now, a dead young man who took his own life.

Jax didn't remember much about him except that he looked like someone who was in his early twenties with a pair of piercing blue eyes and of course, with the so called 'I don't belong here' written all over his face.

Actually, he didn't look like a criminal type though and this made Jax curious about the crime that he committed to be ended up in this place.

On the other hand, Hank walked with the very definition of cruelty and ruthlessness in his every step. Coupled with his arrogance and psychotic underlings, he exuded the vibes that he was not one to be messed with.

That crazy man loved to smile, until his creepy sea green eyes turned into slits. And, from his shoulder length half curled hair with some white strands here and there, he looked like someone in his early forties.

It was indeed pitiful that Garry became a subject of entertainment to that weirdly smiling lunatic of a rougish man and his psychotic minions.

Jax finally sighed and left that block of buildings, as there was nothing for him to do there now.

He walked toward his cell while dragging his feet slowly.

However, right after he turned into one of the corridors which would lead to his match box of a prison cell, he saw one of the few familiar faces he came to know in this prison, talking to a guard while pointing a finger at his room.

Jax literally saw the word trouble flashing in front of him when he realized who the owner of that familiar face was. He was an inmate who followed Hank, the man with bald head.

What was he saying to the guard?

Jax quickened his pace up to a noticeable speed and within a minute he was already standing in front of his room. He ignored the two people talking behind him and entered his room quickly, intending to take an afternoon nap.

However, the guard chose to approach him right at this moment and asked him to step out of the cell before he spoke something into his walkie talkie.

In the next minute, he saw another two guards appearing behind the first guard who then grabbed him outside before flanking his both arms.

"We found this in your bedding." The first guard told a confused Jax.

In his hand, was a pocket knife.

How did it appear in my room?
