No matter what happens, I will always protect you.” He released her, rising to his feet with her in his arms. “Don’t think that it means that I have forgiven you. I am still very angry with you.” She opened her mouth to speak but suddenly, a pulse fluttered against her chest. “What’s wrong?” Lars demanded when she turned pale, her eyes dropping to her chest. Fingers trembling, Eira wondered if she was doing the right thing. She had to know what this ‘cub’ was. How attached was it to her body? She touched its soft, smooth back – like warm velvet. Her hand pulled back when it twitched. A soft squeak startled them both. Gingerly, she returned her hand to its back, and this time, she connected with it. Year 3362 | Month 1 | Day 26

Dear Diary,

Today was my first hunt with Daddy. Mommy says it's an honour to have the first kill and she is proud of me for catching the fishes for Casper's third birthday celebration. I didn't have the heart to tell them that I've already experienced my first kill with Uncle Florian, though it had been an accident. Uncle Florian said it's our secret and I won't ever betray him. Uncle Kulan and the other Qeath tribe members will be joining us tomorrow, and I'm excited to meet my cousins. I hope they are excited to meet me too.

Year 3363 | Month 2 | Day 12

Dear Diary,

Is it strange that I saw Uncle Koga and Aunty Anaelle kissing today? I know mommy and daddy are always kissing because they love each other. And I think that's how babies are made because mommy says I'm going to have another baby brother or sister. I hope it's a sister. Casper's no fun, and he always cries. Does that mean Uncle Koga and Aunty Anaelle are going to have a baby too?

Year 3364 | Month 3 | Day 04

Dear Diary,

Mommy and I discovered my powers today. We were out foraging when we came across an injured Pavaroo. I felt strange when I touched it. It was like something flowed out of me and into the Pavaroo. Before I knew it, it was healed! How cool is that? Mommy says I've inherited her healing abilities and I can't wait to tell Aunty Anaelle. I hope one day I'll be as awesome as mommy and daddy. They're always trying to help both people and predators and I can't wait to grow up so that I can be useful too.

Year 3365 | Month 10 | Day 18

Dear Diary,

Little brothers are annoying. I'm writing this right now because no one else will listen to what I have to say. Casper and Loki destroyed my plants today and I am so mad. I told them that I hated them. Daddy says I should be more forgiving because family is important, and we should learn to be understanding. I don't care what he says, I'm just so mad! Why can't they just leave me alone?

Update :

Daddy didn't want to tell me, but I found out anyway. Casper and Loki went to him for help to replant the flowers they destroyed. They apologized and promised never to hurt my feelings again. Had Daddy known all along that this would happen? I guess parents do know their children like the back of their hand. And I take back what I said. Little brothers can be loving.

Year 3366 | Month 5 | Day 10

Dear Diary,

I wonder who Regis Ciel is. Mommy received a note from him today and Daddy was furious. Even Uncle Florian and Uncle Koga weren't happy about it. I wonder what happened between them in the past. Maybe one day I'll finally learn about all those stories I've heard about Mommy and Daddy's time in Ataxia. I know Daddy used to be a Captain and his friend; Captain Hakon comes every month to visit. He's a scary looking man. And one time, a man with the bluest eyes I've ever seen came to Haven for the first time. I heard his name is Commander Strauss. While I have yet to discover the truth, it's amazing to know that my parents used to be so badass (according to Uncle Koga). Long story short, I know my parents created Haven to escape from the government and to create a sanctuary for people in need of help and shelter. I hope to grow up and be like them one day – strong and reliable – and to protect the weak from predators alike.
