The fossil maniac's face contorted with pain. He struggled for a while before managing to say with difficulty, "Okay. As long as you can bring those two fossils back, I can let you pick one for yourself!"
"Three," Hu Yang declared, "plus a Pokédex."
"Impossible!" The fossil maniac's face turned pale. Three pieces! These were the treasures he had painstakingly unearthed over many years of hard work. "Don't even think about it, at most one piece!"
Hu Yang raised his eyebrows indifferently, "I don't really understand you people who collect stones as wives."
"That's up to you," Hu Yang continued, turning to leave. He was well aware of the difficulty of the assignment.
The Mirage Tower, as the name suggested, was a tall tower with no specific location. "Phantom" meant that it was like a phantom – now you see it, now you don't. It was a risky venture, akin to chasing a mirage that one might never find in a lifetime.
Aside from the tower's elusive nature, the desert housed dangerous Wild Pokémon, enough to give an average trainer a run for their money. Reality was not a game; in addition to Wild Pokémon, the desert posed threats with its sandstorms and treacherous quicksand, shrouded by an endless expanse of yellow sand.
Contemplating this, Hu Yang reconsidered his demand for three fossils. Mega Evolution Stones were precious, but preserving life took precedence. Moreover, as a rookie trainer, venturing into such perilous territory was not advisable.
"Don't go!" The fossil maniac weighed the value in his heart. If the old one didn't go away, the new one wouldn't come. Gritting his teeth, he said, "Okay! Three pieces are three pieces!"
"Deal," Hu Yang agreed.
The fossil maniac inquired, "Now, shall I take you to my house?"
Hu Yang shook his head, "I still have things to do. How far is your house from here?"
Pointing in one direction, the fossil maniac said, "It's over there, you can see it through that bush, about 500 meters away."
"Okay, I'll go look for you when I'm done with this," Hu Yang replied.
The fossil maniac nodded, insisting that he would wait at home. Hu Yang continued to follow Axew to its lair, his sprained foot slowing his pace. As they traversed the forest, Hu Yang contemplated capturing a rideable Pokémon, envisioning various creatures like the formidable Arcanine, the rotund Dragonite, and the majestic Pidgeot.
However, most of these Pokémon were challenging for him to obtain. Growlithe and its family were controlled by the Officer Jenny family, Dragonite was overseen by the Royal Dragon family in the Johto Region, and Charizard was allocated by the Kanto Alliance to Rookie trainers.
Although Wild Pokémon were an option, the probability of encountering these elusive creatures was as low as winning a grand prize in a lottery. Axew suddenly emitted a happy growl, disappearing into the grass. It soon reappeared, beckoning Hu Yang with a playful gesture.
Curious if they had arrived, Hu Yang scanned the area and found the described tree with marks carved by teeth. Axew used these markings to delineate its territory.
They reached the forest's deepest part, where the unchecked growth of grass and towering trees created an ideal habitat. Axew led Hu Yang to an open space by a tall bush, revealing a gathering of Axew and other Pokémon.
To Hu Yang's surprise, there were numerous Axew – around twenty, he guessed. His Axew joyfully joined the others, engaging in playful antics on the forest floor. Suddenly, different growls emanated from the depths of the forest, followed by the emergence of Haxorus and Fraxure.
In the Pokémon world, creatures were divided into group-living and solitary-living types. The Haxorus family belonged to the former category. The two Haxorus eyed the lone human cautiously.
Axew, sensing the tension, halted its play and stood before the two Haxorus, emitting reassuring growls. It seemed to be explaining the situation to them.
"They're talking about going on a trip with you," Gengar, who had silently observed the scene, informed Hu Yang.
Curious about their conversation, Hu Yang asked, "What did they say?"
Gengar directed his attention upward, prompting Hu Yang to witness Axew touching cheeks and teeth with other Axews and Fraxure. This gesture signified friendliness and goodbye.
Axew ran towards Hu Yang, then turned back to wave at its companions, signaling its departure with the human.
As he held Axew in his arms, Hu Yang felt the need to say something. Assuring Axew and the Haxorus on the opposite side, he declared, "Don't worry, I'll take care of it!"
Axew clawed at its companions, bidding farewell.
"Then, I'm going to take you in!" Hu Yang announced, taking out an empty red and white Poké Ball.
"Axew!" Axew nodded.
Hu Yang smiled, and the Poké Ball emitted a red light, capturing Axew within. The introduction of Axew appeared in Hu Yang's mind:
