“Master will whip me if you disappear,Miss”she says.
“I’m not going anywhere,”I assure her.“Now go get it,I’m absolutely freezing.”
Nora turns and walks very quickly toward the big house.
I smile at Anna and clutch her shoulder,mindful of her scarred back.“I know what to do.”
She sets her mouth firmly and nods.
“Do you wish you could make this journey without me?”I ask.“Do you still blame me for Hannah’s death?”
“We’ve been bound together almost our whole lives.I know finding out that your father is also mine must have been a shock.If we had a normal family,none of this would have happened.We’ve both grown up under tyranny.Mammy said you were a wonderful child,and only changed your attitude after I became your servant and she caught me playing dolls with you.”
