Chapter 4 The Job Opportunity

CHAPTER 4

Present

"Yeah, that s the story of my life, crazy, right?" I know. In other, for me to take over dad business I need all the knowledge and experience I can t get; that s why I applied for a big publishing firm in New York City, but I ended up here in this shitty place.

I was so focused on being someone worth of my father s establishment that I didn t even have time to smile or be happy, I didn t party or even date; yep! I am a twenty – six years old virgin. Back then, I didn t have the strength or time to love, and honestly I still don t. Despite the fear of having a family and losing them often stop me from about having one; I wonder if there s a man out there for me, if there is I want a perfect love just like my parents.

"Oh! There you are." Edna said suddenly, appearing out of nowhere.

"Jesus! Edna" Grace said, shocked, "do you have to sneak up on me like that; I almost had a heart attack."

"Really; that s new."

"What? What did you say?"

"Nothing, what could say?"

"Seriously, Edna, what do you want?"

"Not me! The boss is calling for that the new intake, which includes you." Edna said turning her heels

That s strange Mr. Bark never calls a meeting with new recruit "Did he say why?" I asked, following her.

"It s not my job to ask, grace." She turns and gave me a side way look before going into the office.

As annoying as she sound she was right but damn I thought I told her to stop addressing me by my first name.

"That bitch." I mutter to myself.

Just like Edna has said; when I got into the office, the new intake had gathered round Mr. Bert. There were five of us and from Mr. Bert we had found out that they will be a new boss at the headquarters and just when I started to think that information shouldn t be my cup my tea; Mr. Bert added "the new intakes in all the branches not just here are been required to sign in at the headquarters starting from next week Monday which is three days from now and …."

"Wait sir!" I said, interrupting him, "what does that mean? I don t understand; are we being fired or something?" I mean if I were to choose between being fired and working in this shabby place; will I prefer the latter, and of course no one need to know about this thought but now Mr. Bert was staring at me confusingly not just him but the entire staff "What! Did I say something wrong?" I asked in confusion.

Mr. Bert signed in frustration, no doubt he is going to lecture me "What are you talking about Miss. Bush? I said sign in which obviously mean to 'resume and not being fired, were you even listing to me Grace?"

"Oh! Yes, of course, sir". Nope I wasn t, but he said resume, wait; does that mean starting from next week Monday I will be working out the headquarters; OMG no way.

"GRACE!"

"WHAT? I mean sir."

"Did you hear what I just said?"

"What you said?" I looked at the other staffs who were now laughing at me, "nope sir, I didn t."

"Seriously grace! Is there is not going to be an issue; because if there are, then your name doesn t need to be in this list." He said, waving a sheet of paper at me.

"What! Issue?" I said calmly, "of course not, sir, I was just thinking." I said smiling at him; Hell, there s going to be no issues, not when my prayers are being answered at last.

"You don t think when I talk, Grace; you listen. You are going to a new environment; I just hope nothing of your self-proclaim will be an issue." He said, glaring at me.

Son of a bitch "of course not! Sir." I said calmly, smiling at him, Basted.

Mr. Bert continued, "as I was saying before, I was rudely interrupted." He said, glaring at me one last time before proceeding.

"For some reason the new boss is looking for new talents and instead of re-employing, he wants to try out the new intake.; so if you are luck you will be retained if not you will be fired for real, you only have four days; go put your things in other, inform who you need to be informed before on Saturday; we will be leaving as early 7:30 am on Sunday and don t worry if you are retained accommodations will not be a problem, so for now go home and prepare, we meet here on Saturday evening or Sunday morning if you can make it on time.; am I understood."

"Yes sir." We chorus in excitement.

"Now off you go." Mr. Bert said and went into his office.

"YES FINALLY." I shriek in excitement while others were murmuring among themselves; the first person I told the good news was not my so-called relatives that I was staying with but with Mrs. Hail, she is the only one I can say truly cares for me.

Phone ringing "hello! Grace?"

"Hello, Mrs. Hail, you won t believe what just happen."

"Well, with the excitement in your voice; I can t tell it s something good."

"Hell yeah, Fuck It is."

"Grace! Language please" Mrs. Hail said with a heavy sign "you are not a child anymore, and I can t keep correcting you, can t believe how much you change; what happened to that sweet, humble girl?" Mrs. Hail asked in disbelief.

"Yeah! I wonder." I replied her.

"Yeah, Whatever." she said dryly, "so the good news?"

"Oh yes!" I went ahead and told her about the new transfer, and she was happy for me, and honestly that s what I like about her.

she asked if I plan to tell my uncle about the news but no I decide not to tell them, for some time now, there have being disturbing me to take over the film, but I refuse.

So if I told them about my leaving the country, I don t think they will take it well. Mrs. Hail agreed to go with whatever decision I make, and for that am grateful.

But then because I had no intention of coming back so quick and if there were not retaining, I plan on spreading my wings a little before returning. So with this in mind I told Mrs. Hail to help me secure a space and some documents just in case weren t among the retained intakes; I can stay without encountering any problem, and thankfully she agreed.
