Things continued this way for a few more months which covered half of the year in the blink of an eye. This method was effective enough to tie Damon and his team down, leaving them in the second sky of the human realm, while every other student caught up to them. Deep resentment for these students filled Damon's heart but there was nothing he could do about it
Luckily it didn't take too long for something to draw their attention.
News of a duel between a mage and a guardian on the mainland soon spread. (AN; Even within the capital ordinary nobles and citizens can reside but the mainland is where the royal palace and other high-ranking nobles reside. The capital is divided into two to differentiate the wealth and the average)
The duel lead to the death of the mage who was badly beaten to a pulp before being stabbed in the chest. The news of this caused a wildfire in the magic academy which sparked a side of the mages that one could rarely see.
While mages naturally hated each other and saw their fellow student as a competitor, there is one thing they can never allow to happen.
Let a powerless human have the satisfaction of defeating one of them and walking away alive.
Once two or more people are able to defeat mages and nothing happens, it is only a matter of time before everyone will think mages are not unique in any way. This will prompt more people to come and challenge mages as they please!
Thus, they couldn't let this slide!
Quickly various mages tossed challenges at fighters at random whom in turn responded negatively. The actions of the fighters caught everyone off guard and shocked most but to Damon this was obvious. Now they have a win in their name, why accept another challenge and ruin the reputation they just acquired? With no fighter willing to do battle, the mages took it upon themselves to track students of the fighter academy and battle them regardless! This flipped the entire situation and made it something far more violent than usual.
The capital became a battleground for students of both academies which led to the death of many. Fighters seek out mages in groups while mages seek out the fighters individually. The proud mages refused to stick together as it will sully their reputation but after a handful of them had died, they had no choice but to move in groups for the sake of security.
Every task required them to leave the academy and head outside the capital so clashes were imminent and as expected the royals and kingdom turned a blind eye to this. Looking into the matter, even more, Damon realized this happens every year and never has the kingdom intervened to calm the situation down. In their opinion this was part of the natural selection process, the strong will survive while the weak will perish. That way, those who survive the first years will be the best of the best!
….........................….
With the attention of the students pinned on the war outside their academy, things returned to normal and Damon could finally get good tasks. Without hesitation, they picked the best and most rewarding tasks all at once and quickly applied to have them dealt with. After which they left the academy and hired a carriage to take them out of the capital
"We have been excluded from this war because we spent most of our lives within the academy. Now we are going out again, it should be expected that we may get attacked" Cyrus said with a slight frown.
"May? We will definitely get attacked" Gin chuckled.
"No one can resist the temptation of killing a chosen," Klien said.
"Both sides have the ten chosen, each representing the peak experts of each academy. It is safe to say, defeating a chosen from any side will be a heavy blow. While the other six took advantage of what happened earlier to stack up on resources, making it unnecessary for them to leave the academy, we were oppressed. We need the resources so we need to leave." Damon said and the others nodded in agreement.
"What I find amusing is that we have been on the move and two people have been following us… should we stop now and deal with them or wait till we leave the capital?" Damon added with a cruel smile.
His words triggered the attention of the other three and made them frown.
"If they are looking for a fight, it's best we deal with it now. Having our carriage destroyed due to conflict not only means we won't be able to complete our missions but we will also have to head back on foot which is doom for any mage now" Gin said thoughtfully and the others nodded in agreement.
The carriage soon stopped at a corner and the team stepped out with Damon walking ahead. His eyes darted around like that of an eagle before a slight frown appeared on his face.
He could sense the negative emotions directed towards them but he couldn't find their exact location?
'They must be skilled!' Damon thought!
"We are here, if you choose to fight then show yourselves" Damon said coldly
"Hehehehe! To think they could spot us, as expected of a chosen of the magic academy" A sinister yet tender voice sounded from the shadow of the carriage not too far behind them and a lady emerged!
Bang!
From atop a building, a figure shot out and landed heavily, unlike the girl he wasn't graceful! The duo was dressed in an all black attire while daggers could be found on the lady's waist, and the male had a greatsword tied to his back.
The two had a dangerous aura lingering around them and upon seeing them, Damon couldn't help but frown!
He turned to see the rest of his team frowning as well which made his heart skip a beat! What the hell can make someone like Gin wear a bad look on his face!
"The Vincent family duo! Hehehe! Who would have thought our first meeting would be an unpleasant one?" Gin said with a sour look.
