At the seventh day after death, the Ghost Soldiers would release the souls to return home when the sky had turned completely dark; they also bound an ankle ring onto the left foot of each ghost to prevent them from lingering after seeing their homes. Should any ghost not bear to leave, the Ghost Soldiers would chant a spell to transform the ankle ring into iron chains, then forcibly drag the souls back to the Underworld. These rules were informed to the souls before they were allowed to go home, warning them that if they were reluctant to leave, upon being dragged back to the Underworld they would receive one hundred lashes as punishment.
