43. Explaining Without Evidence

All eyes have been on me for the past five minutes. They are all waiting for an explanation. More importantly, they are expecting evidence. I of all people should have known that nobody will believe my accusation against Dave without well detailed evidence.

"I uhm…" I begin, rubbing my sweaty palms together.

"Tell us Officer Sarah, when and how did all this happen?"

I inhale deeply, knowing that I need my voice to be solid if they are going to believe any single word I say. Dave is at the corner, gaping at me like I have lost my mind. I can still remember the deal we struck barely half an hour before all this began.

"I… I…" No matter how hard I try, my voice won't stop shaking.

When one of them finally runs out of patience with me, he stands and approaches me, "I understand if you can't say anything right now. No one should after going through such a traumatic event. But I trust that you at least have evidence, no?"

I freeze.
