"First day on the job. You excited?" I asked as I reached the breakfast table, hoping she wouldn't sense the lack of enthusiasm in my voice. I sat down, briefly.

"Technically it's not the first day," she started with her mouth full.

"I've already started working for you, remember?" She added after she'd swallowed her mouthful of pancakes and gulped down some orange juice.

"You're already dressed up," she said, her eyes widening.

"I haven't even taken a shower," she said looking down.

"Its fine. You'll need to be at HQ by 9. I'm leaving early because I have a private meeting. "

"You're leaving right now?" She asked as I got up. "Wait," she said, wrapping her fingers around my arm in a light grip.

I glanced at her hand, then at her face. She looked genuinely concerned.

"You haven't eaten anything yet," she said.

I sighed. "The people I'm meeting aren't joking around. I dont have time for breakfast."

She let go hesitantly. "Okay," was all she said.
