Seeing the drastic change in Eric's expression, Liam shuddered and for a moment, he felt as if he was looking at some bloodthirsty beast.
"H-hey, man. Are you alright?" He asked in concern. It was his first time seeing him wear such an expression, so he guessed things must have turned nasty with the noble. But if that was the case, he shouldn't be alive right now, right?
"Huh? Yeah. I'm alright." Eric snapped out of his thoughts upon hearing his voice.
"It's alright if you aren't comfortable talking about it." Liam said, not wanting to make him uncomfortable.
"No worries." Eric easily saw through his intentions. Smiling lightly, he calmed his surging anger and the memories of that flashed in front of his eyes.
Two months ago, he was rushing to the borders of the middle sector to meet Elena. She had asked him to come there. She would give him some credits to buy the food supplies. It was then he came across a young noble woman.
She was an exquisite beauty. Wherever she passed, people couldn't help but look at her and marvel at her noble elegance and her beauty.
He, as an 18-year-old young man with raging hormones, couldn't help but take a few furtive glances at her, just like everyone else.
How could he have known that those few glances of his would cause that arrogant young master following behind her to become angry at him for some reason and he would drag him away to the demonic mountains, torture him before throwing him into the abyss to die?
Of course, he didn't mention anything about the demon. It wasn't because he didn't want to tell him, but because he knew he should keep it a secret. If not, it could cause him endless trouble.
Why? Because demons were humanity's mortal enemies and a taboo. Therefore, if someone knew he had made a deal with a demon, he might not get to see the next day's sun.
"This is ridiculous! How could they do this to you? Weren't there other people who looked at her? Fuck these arrogant noble bastards!" Liam started cursing in anger upon hearing what his best friend had gone through.
"Shhh! Keep it down, brother. You know what will happen if those nobles' underling found out you were cursing their masters." Eric hurriedly put his hand on his mouth, vigilantly looking around.
It was very common for some hunger torn people in this area to tell the noble family's servants if they hear someone curse or blame the nobles for some rations or credits.
This had happened a few times and everyone who said anything demeaning about the nobles was killed without exception. Even their family members were not spared.
After this, even if the nobles took away their family members for slavery, which they occasionally did, no one dared to challenge them in fear of their whole family's annihilation.
Liam shuddered when he realized what he had done in anger and shut his mouth.
Seeing his face turning pale, Eric patted his shoulder and smiled in comfort. "Don't worry. You weren't too loud or your family would have come out by now."
"Yeah, you are right." Liam nodded, feeling relieved. He then curiously regarded Eric and asked, "You said they threw you off some cliff after seriously injuring you, right?"
"Yeah, what about it?" Eric asked, his expression calm. Instead of telling him he was thrown into the demon abyss, he told him those guys pushed him down some random cliff after beating him up.
"How come you are perfectly fine even after all that?" Liam asked with an expression that said he knew he was hiding something.
Eric smiled wryly at his inquiry before shrugging. "I'm not sure what happened, but when I regained consciousness, I was right outside the city and my injuries had also disappeared."
"Hehe, you want me to believe that?" Liam chuckled, clearly not believing his words.
"It's up to you. I told you all I could," Eric smiled.
Liam was silent for a moment before he walked toward him, brought his face to his ears and asked in a whisper, "Did that noble hottie saved you?"
"Huh? Who?" Eric frowned in confusion.
"Tch! That pretty noble girl who got you in trouble in the first place." Liam said, his eyes shining.
"What makes you say that?" Eric asked, pushing him back. He knew this friend of his loved to imagine the weirdest possibilities.
"Maybe after she realized you got in trouble after looking at her, she secretly went after you guys and after they were done beating you, she saved you. You know, only those nobles have those miracle medicine to cure serious injuries within a short period. If not her, who would save you, that demon living in the mountain range?" Liam snickered.
Eric's heart jolted when he heard the last part, but his expression didn't change. He nodded indifferently. "Maybe your conjecture is right."
"Damn man. Show some inter…" Liam wanted to continue on this topic to sate his curiosity, but just then, a figure walked out from behind him, grabbed his hand and sent him staggering to the side.
Swoosh!
Eric felt a wave of pleasing sent wash over him. When he focused to see who it was, he saw a sweet-looking young girl in a plain dress standing only two feet away from him.
She had delicate features. An oval face, thin eyebrows, a cute nose, olive skin tone and luscious red and full lips. Her silky brown hair was cascading down her shoulders like a waterfall. Her height was only one or two inches shorter than his.
Her bright brown eyes were looking at straight into his eyes, a rosy blush adorning her soft cheeks.
"H-Hello, Eric. H-How are you?" She asked with a shy expression on her face while constantly tiding her dress to look better.
"Hello, Elsa. I'm perfectly fine. How are you?" Eric smiled somewhat stiffly, giving Liam a side glance.
This young lady was Liam's elder sister. She was twenty years old, two years older than him, but always acted like a little naïve girl in front of him. He knew why this was so. It was because she had a crush on him and when she was close to him, she wouldn't be able to control her emotions.
Although he knew she always liked him, he never said or did anything that suggested he was interested in her because she was his best friend's sister. If he accepted her feelings, things may get awkward with Liam, which he didn't want, so he kept a respectful distance from her.
Seeing Eric looking at him for help, Liam acted as if he didn't see it and started looking around. He was helpless toward this big sister of his. He had hinted at the fact that Eric wasn't interest in her many times, but she just wouldn't budge and was adamant to pursing him.
Because she loved Eric so much, she stubbornly defied her parents when they wanted her to marry upon becoming 16 years old. She got so mad that she told them she would die if they wanted her to marry someone other than Eric.
A moment ago, when Eric called him out, she immediately stopped doing her work, rushed to the bathroom to change her clothes and put on some light make-up to look presentable. Since she was so in love with him, he decided to leave things on these two.
Furthermore, he wasn't averse to the idea of him being his brother-in-law because he knew what kind of man Eric was more than anyone. There may be no one better for his sister than him.
Unfortunately, Eric didn't interest in her even after he hinted a few times he wouldn't mind if he got together with her.
Seeing Liam ignore his cry for help, Eric sighed helplessly and focused his gaze on Elsa.
She was quite beautiful and had her innocent girl charm. Her figure was also quite good and had all the curves a woman needed to look attractive to a man. Furthermore, she was sincere in her love for him.
Even though her home was almost half an hour distance from his and it wasn't really safe for a girl to travel outside without protection, whenever he asked her to spend some time with Riya when he was going out with Liam, she would always comply to his words. For doing this, she was reprimanded by her parents a lot, but she didn't care.
Sigh!
Eric sighed. He was sure if she wasn't Liam's sister, he would have long accepted her feelings and married her.
"Elsa, I…" He took a deep breath, his eyes flashing with determination as he decided to tell her she should stop thinking about him. However, seeing the love for him in her eyes, he just couldn't bring himself to say these cruel words to her.
Elsa gulped nervously. She could see he wanted to say something very important about their relationship.
'Is he finally going to refuse my love?' She thought, a feeling of despondence rising in her heart and the glow in her eyes dimmed slightly.
"Tell me." She firmly said.
Eric obviously saw the change in her expression and felt sad for her. Therefore, instead of outright rejecting her and breaking her heart, he said, "There is someone else I love."
"Huh?" Elsa's body trembled and tears appeared in her eyes. Just as he wanted to say something to console her, she started to smile brilliantly.
Eric looked at her in confusion, not understanding why she was smiling.
