Spear Basics

Ok first thang first Tate we are a tribe of hunters and not warriors so I can only teach you some the basics. We mostly throw the spears but from time to time something will charge us, and we will have to get more up close and personal than hunters usually like.

Since you have the sling for range attacks lets focus the close quarter stuff for a while. Firstly, you have a shorter spear its only 4 feet long, me and the other 3 hunters all have longer spears that are the same length as the atlatl darts, which is 6 to 7 feet, so in your case you will be extra close if you find yourself in a face-to-face situation.

"Marcus why do you use such a long spear it must be harder to throw something so long not to mention it's got to be harder to throw in tight spots."

What you say little Tate is not wrong but like I said yesterday there are stronger creatures in this forest, and this long spear has more weight than your little one so it can pierce better, it's just the price we have to pay for are safety and stomachs.

Practice time little one, both hands on the spear, one close to the bottom the other about 3/4 the way up the shaft. Since this is your first time using the spear there are several things you can do. Firstly, and probably the most used is the basic forward thrust at the right moment and location this can be a very deadly move. Secondly size is a factor you have lower and upper thrusts, try to always look for an opening and by that, I mean a soft spot like the eye, neck, under the chin, armpit, gaps in armor. We may live in a massive forest but there is much in this world little Tate. There are towns and cities all throughout the world, there are also dungeons I have stumbled across a couple in my time, and they are strange and very dangerous locations, some are full of deadly animal like creatures' others are humanoid creatures and some of them wear armor. So long story short expect the unexpected little Tate.

One last thing I didn't mention there are other moves like the vertical and horizontal slashes. As you can see it's a basic wooden shaft with a stone head. We are not craft men either we have learned over the years on how to make the basic weapons but if you try any slashes I can promise you, you will just manage to tear the stone spear head off, so I'm saying avoid that move with these weapons.

What's a Sir, Marcus asked. Crap Tate thought to himself I guess that word isn't in this world.

"I don't know Sir it just sounded right to say that since you're my teacher."

I kind of like it Marcus said keep it up.

I suddenly feel like I'm in the army Tate thought to himself.

Ok now that the chit chat is out the way lets spar, we will start slowly, you thrust, I will block and give you pointers.

After 30 minutes Tate was feeling comfortable, in his old world you can't practice with weapons out in the open without someone thinking you're a weirdo or a dangerous individual. 30 minutes later Tate and Marcus are still going at it rather quickly, forward, upper and lower thrust were flying toward Marcus constantly but with many years under his belt he just casually blocked every attack Tate had.

"Not much just really enjoying the spear training, Marcus besides the spear and the atlatl do you or any of the other hunters know of any other fighting or weapon skills. Practicing with my sling and spear really has me interested in weapon combat lately.

No, we don't know much else ole peter knows some hand to hand but Hes self-taught if you're interested in that. At the speed you learn stuff you will probably have the spear mastered in a week, if you're interested, I will talk to peter.

"I would appreciate it if you talked to him for me, might as well learn what I can before my birthday, then I will busy hunting."

Ok little Tate your still small so I don't know how much he can teach you, but I will talk with him later.

Later that afternoon after dinner as Tate laid in bed, he was curious about his stats, Hes been so focused on mastering the sling he didn't pay much attention to his system, he got level up notifications from time to time but he pushed them aside, that wasn't his priority.
