"How was the ride?" The message came. Derek tried to calm hi heart. He wished he could see her, hug her and cry his heart out once again. But would it ever possible he wondered. John knocked on the door again. But Derek did not open it. He knows it's not his father's fault but he is a part of it anyway. And moreover Derek was too humiliated, ashamed and a little hurt to face his parents. He had no idea how to go speak or engage in conversation when the needs come. His wounds stinked. He laid on the bed. He chose to reply her.
"Why are you still up?" he asked.
The reply was instant.
'I was watching a movie," she said.
"Which?"
"Last First Love," she replied.
"Hmm i have not watched it yet," he said smiling. 'I wanted to watch that with you,' he thought.
"Dinner?"
"Yes I had," he sent back.
"Where did you go?"
"Just around the town," He did not know how to introduce the matter. But he has to anyway.
"Something happened!" he finally texted.
"What happened?' she asked curiously with emojis.
"I slipped,"
"Eh?" she asked.
"I fell down,"
"Lol, where?" she has no idea about the level of seriousness.
"Near by," he replied.
"I see,"
And he took a photo of his cast and sent her.
The emoji of shock came with the blue face. "What? You broke you arm? Oh my God!" she sent. And his phone rang immediately. She called him.
"Am fine," he whispered afraid that his parents might hear him. And he felt thankful for Taaliyah being alone at home.
"Will Grand mother wake in the middle and look for you?" he asked the moment he picked the call.
"No, she would not," she said. "How did this happen? Where did this happen? How could you break your arm ? Was it painful?" she shot him with too much of questions.
"Relax, wait, wait," he laughed. He felt warm. "I will tell you," he said.
"Okay, dummy can you not walk around properly?" she scolded. He could not stop laughing. "Say it," she ordered.
"So I was walking,"
"Okay,"
"Suddenly I slipped, next moment I remember falling them, i got up, my hand was hurt, so.went to hospital and got it checked, there was a fracture,"
"That's it?" she asked.
"Yes, that's all," he replied.
"What are you? 5 year old?" she asked.
"Hehehe oops, what to do?" he said funnily, but deep inside it hurt. Images of the fight inside the car flashing before his eyes, and his mother's words echoing in his ears.
"You are such a nasty woman who do not qualify to be a mother," John said back for hurting their son.
"Ha," Amy said. "Am least surprised. But it's your fault. Who wanted children? I said a thousand time I don't want to have kids when I was not ready," she said back not even caring that Derek is hearing everything. "Only if you pulled out when I begged that night, not only am I a bad mother now but sick since the delivery,"
Derek put it behind him. And tried to calm his heart.
"Called parents? How's grand father?" he aksed changing the topic.
"Hmm I called after you hung up, he was moved to the room, under observation,"
"He will be fine, he will get better soon, don't worry, okay?" Derek consoled her instead.
"Hmm yes," she said.
"I will not be coming for next two day to see if there would be difficulty with the cast, if there is nothing, I will start coming to school okay," he said.
"Take rest and take care Derek. Even am not planning to go tomorrow," she said planning instantly the moment she heard his plan.
"Really?" he was surprised.
"Yes," she replied. Smiling wide.
"Great, we will go back together then," He then remembered that he has the gift he bought for her in his bag.
"Yes sure," she agreed. "What else?"
"What else??" he repeated.
"Nothing," the two said together. He smiled. "It's going to be 1 am, why don't you sleep," she said to him. "You must be tired,"
"You too, sleep, you had a tiring day too," he said back.
"Hmm goodnight then,"
"Goodnight," he wished her and waited for her to hang up. And she did. She was busy deleting all the chats. All the photos shared and she deleted the call log from the call history. She was very careful about it to never get caught by anybody else in the family. And at that time, she saw Nara's messages. But she chose not to reply them late at this hour which would lead to her sister questioning her about being online and using phone late in the night. She handled carefully and thanked God for not receiving any other calls and laid back happily. She had no clue about Derek's tragedy.
And Derek handled it nicely. He was sure that it would hurt her, and saying the truth that he jumped out of the car would make him look pathetic and bad and he did not wish to have that kind of image for himself. But at the time, he just wanted to escape and run away, he had no other hidden intentions and he did it only because his father slowed down. Derek shook his head and tried to get some sleep. But he was not able to. What happened kept coming back in his head.
"Ha," Amy said. "Am least surprised. But it's your fault. Who wanted children? I said a thousand time I don't want to have kids when I was not ready," he heard his mother's words again and again. It disturbed and made him feel unwanted. But then he was ashamed if himself to be feeling all of it and feel emotional. "Am a man, I should not cry or feel hurt, I should handle my emotions well and dispose it," he kept telling himself. When he lost his control he took his phone again and connected the headphone. He took a music application and he began to play his favourite songs. He queued the songs in his playlist and listened carefully. Learning the notes along and in the end he fell asleep. But when he woke up the next morning, he woke up to a shocking surprise. He opened the door and he saw something he was least expecting.
