Chapter 33: Family First

With a full stomach and an almost full heart, Shayla sat in the passenger seat of Evan's car as they pulled into the driveway of her house. It didn't look like much had changed. The grass could use a mowing and there were newspapers piled up on the porch, but other than that, it looked just like home.
She barely had her hand on the car door handle to open it when she saw Hadley come running out of the front door, down the stairs and towards her with lightning speed.
Tears streamed down his face as he jumped heartily into Shayla's waiting arms.
It was moments before either of them spoke. The overwhelming emotions wouldn't let them.
Finally, Hadley caught his breath, and the words came flying out.
"Shayla! I thought I lost you too," said Hadley as he hugged her even tighter.
Shayla pulled Hadley's arms away from her waist and looked him straight in the face.
