“Lucky?”

If Shane had met Stella first, she would still be alive. They would both be happy. It was easy to imagine that the two of them would have married, would have moved to Vegas, and maybe even started a family. Was it too late for that? Too late for them to be married with a family, undoubtedly. But they could make each other happy. They wanted each other, that much was apparent. Their existences were much too intertwined for Lucky to ever consider just leaving—even if he wished he was invisible to Stella, too—but that didn’t mean that both Stella and Shane couldn’t put aside their pain, their own regret, for a night.

Lucky willed the tears to stop and pushed all the negativity down as hard as he could. Nobody wanted him to be morose and depressed. Nobody needed to deal with that, either. “Stella…I don’t think our plan to hook Shane up with somebody is going to work.”

The eyes she turned to him were shiny. “Why?”
