Change of heart

Alex opened his eyes to the beeping of the machine as he looked around, he was unfamiliar with the place he was, he tried to remember what had happened last before he fell unconscious it then occurred to him that the last thing he saw was a truck hitting his car, he then looked around once more before he noticed he was in the hospital, some familiar figures were sitting close to him and even a female figure among them was holding his hands, two of the figures noticed his gaze before they jumped up to hug him as if he had been missing for long, naturally, that was Elizabeth and Eric, then noticed that the figure holding his hands had left it abruptly after she noticed he had woken up.

Immediately he saw the figure intently, string of memories poured into his head, he remembered that after he had helped this figure out when she was bullied in the cafeteria his emotions had gone out of control, leading him to go out of the school, he was unable to focus when he was driving because of the chaotic emotions he had gotten into an accident.

Before he woke up he had heard a voice reading books and many other things to him it wasn't Elizabeth or Eric but it was the third figure with them which was Rachael, although he did not know that the girl he had always pretended to hate on the surface had seldom left his side throughout his coma just like his friends.

Eric had already brought back the doctor, the doctor then examined Alex, shaking his head in satisfaction he told them that he needed some rest before he could be discharged.

Aunt Maddy came sometime later, she had this joyful expression on her face as she hugged Alex, whispering into his ear she said "don't ever scare me like that again"

Elizabeth had observed Alex ever since the time he had woken up, she noticed that he did not even glance at Rachael who was sitting quietly during the whole time, she could not help but be angry, although from what the doctor told them it seems like Alex had already fallen for Rachael, but she knew Alex well, he was so stubborn that he would refuse to reveal his emotions, she had no choice but to speak aloud in displeasure telling Alex how Rachael had taken care of him during this time he had been in the hospital unconscious, she hoped that his heart would move a bit after she had told him.

"Thanks for all you've done for me," he said to Rachael after hearing what Elizabeth had said, only this time his voice was not cold and indifferent but was quite the opposite.

"It's nothing, what are friends for?" Rachael replied shyly when she heard that his voice was different from the way he used to speak to her.

Never would have Elizabeth imagined that Alex would say that although she had expected him to say lay his gratitude in a cold and indifferent voice, never the less she was still disappointed in Alex she wished he could have said something better.

Alex didn't even spare Elizabeth a glance as he knew what she was thinking, laying down on his bed he drifted into a wonderland, his aunt and friends sighed in relief when they saw that Alex had slept, it seems that it wouldn't be an easy task to make Alex reveal his emotions to them, they could only hope that Rachael would be able to do that.

Seeing that Alex had slept "why don't we all return home and come back early in the morning tomorrow" she said to the others, as she felt that there was no need to be with him again since he had woken up.

Nodding their heads in agreement they all went out of the ward as they all headed home in aunt Maddy's car.

Immediately they left Alex's eye sprang open, he had only pretended to be asleep earlier so that they could leave, luckily his plan had succeeded and they had all left him and gone back home.

Gazing at the ceiling "how low have I fallen" he asked himself, his dark black eyes had no ripples in them as nobody knew what he was thinking, thinking about the past event he smiled as he slowly closed his eyes as he allowed sleep to carry him away.

Meanwhile, in Rachael's house, she was lying on her bed thinking about the past, and how she had fallen in love at first sight with Alex, "I was the one who that claimed that there was nothing like love at first sight, but now I am a victim of it" how laughable she laughed at herself.

Alex had always been cold and indifferent to her, but she did not know why, anytime he was been cold and indifferent towards her, she could not help but feel drawn toward him again and again. All the time Alex had ignored her she was bullied in his presence she always felt that she could not hate him, rather she felt drawn to him, she did not know why "had she been bewitched by him?" She couldn't say.

When she heard that he had been involved in an accident and she had seen him unconscious, she had felt that her heart had been torn into a thousand-piece, she couldn't help but stay by his side never wanting to leave his side until he woke up, she had felt more than happy when she finally saw him open his eyes.

Earlier when he had thanked her for what she had done for him, although she felt happy that his voice wasn't cold and indifferent, she could not help but want that side of his, his indifference and coldness "had she fallen in love with that side of him?" She could not help but ask herself, she felt that she preferred his other side "was she mad?" She asked herself again, "how could she love that side of his?" She asked herself again, yeah what if she loved that side of his, what does it have to do with anyone anyways, she replied herself, as all these random thoughts were going on, she did not know when she embraced the fatigue overwhelming her before falling asleep, that night even she knew that her sleep would be different compared to the ones she had since she had moved to Cambridge.

The next morning in the hospital, as the sun ray shone upon the window plane, reflecting and illuminating the room, the ray of light also reflected on Alex as he opened his eyes, yawning he used a hand to cover his face, using the other to pull and close the open curtain that made the ray reflect on him, he yawned again as he stretched his body lightly, looking around, he saw his aunt with Elizabeth and Eric, but Rachael was not with them.

"Where is Rachael" Alex asked curiously.

The three of them had their expression changing slightly before his aunt replied "she's at home sleeping, so we decided not to wake her since you are going to be discharged today".

Shaking his head in understanding he turned his head only to see Eric and Elizabeth laughing at him, frowning slightly, "why are you both laughing" he asked seriously, making them burst into another round of laughter.

After suppressing their laughter, Eric replied "it never occurred to us that a girl would make the cold and indifferent Alex worry about her, how would other girls feel when they hear about this? exactly how would they feel?" Eric said.

"They would feel depressed and jealous of course wanting to tear her apart" Elizabeth replied in a mocking voice.

"Is that the reason why you are laughing?" Alex said feeling a bit embarrassed.

Amidst their talks and laughter, the doctor came in and examined Alex, after making sure he was alright, the doctor talked to aunt Maddy before discharging Alex and allowing him to follow them back home.

On getting home Alex went directly to his room, getting there he discovered it was not as messy as he had left it, it was clean and tidy, he'd reckoned it was his friends, going into the bathroom he had a good bath before stepping outside, he heard his aunt calling him from downstairs, quickly putting on his clothes he rushed to the parlour.

"Come eat some food you haven't eaten anything since a month and two weeks ago," his aunt said to him immediately after he got to the parlour.

"WHAT!, so have been in a coma for a month and two weeks and you guys didn't even breath a word about it to me" Alex yelled when he heard what his aunt said turning to his friends.

"What did you expect, do you think you were just unconscious for two or three days" Eric replied sarcastically.

"But why didn't you guys tell me about it," he asked, but this time in a calm voice.

"And why would we bother to do that"Elizabeth who was by the side replied.

Only now did Alex know why Elizabeth was angry with him when he did not spare Rachael a glance since he woke up, it turned out that she had stubbornly stood by his side for a month and two weeks, "why had she done that" he asked himself but couldn't get an answer to his question, he felt a little guilty of his attitude to her so he decided to make it up to her, his heart had finally wavered cause of what she had done for him despite his attitude towards her, definitely are girls are not the same, he finally decided to go visit her after he finishes his meal, he wondered what her expression would be when she sees him, he had never gone to her house since she moved except for once when his aunt had sent him over, since then he hasn't gone over, despite being next-door neighbors, sighing he finally sat down, quickly he ate his food not forgetting to savour the taste as he had missed his aunts' cooking.
