THE HEADMASTER

The classmates chimed in, some agreeing with Lila, others supporting the ocean boy, turning the classroom into a noisy battleground of conflicting stories.

"I didn't do anything! She just can't handle a little competition!" The ocean boy yelled over the noise, trying to defend his actions.

"Liar! You know exactly what you did. You're just trying to make everyone else look bad like your hairstyle," Lila retorted, her fists clenched at her sides.

Professor Hawthorne, overwhelmed by the escalating arguments, slammed her hand on the desk for attention. "Enough! Both of you, to the headmaster's office, now," she commanded with a stern voice that brooked no further discussion.

As they left the classroom, the noisy debate among their classmates continued, but Lila and the ocean boy walked in tense silence. The heavy air was charged with their mutual resentment.

"Seriously, just admit you were trying to embarrass me in front of everyone," Lila hissed, unable to keep quiet any longer.

"And you overreacted! You're dangerous," he countered sharply, his glare intensifying.

They reached the headmaster's office, each simmering with frustration and the certainty of their perspective. "We'll see what the headmaster has to say about this," Lila said, her voice cold.

"Yeah, we will," he replied, just as icy as they stood waiting, the door to the headmaster's office looming before them.

As they neared the headmaster's office, Lila's stomach churned with a familiar dread. This scene felt all too similar to experiences at her previous school where confrontations had frequently marred her record and friendships.

The office door creaked open, signaling the imminent lecture they were about to receive.

"Blackwood! What mischief have you managed this time?" the headmaster demanded, his voice thick with annoyance and anger. His sharp gaze then shifted to Lila.

"Lila Wren," she introduced herself, realizing that the headmaster didn't recognize her as he did Blackwood. "I must admit, the fault was mine. I couldn't control my fire and nearly caused harm to... Blackwood?" she said, her voice uncertain.

"It will not happen again, your honor." Lila quickly corrected herself as she noticed the headmaster's puzzled look, "I mean, sir."

Blackwood stepped forward, his demeanor calm and authoritative. "Mr. King, if I may," he began in a composed tone, taking full responsibility. "The incident was indeed precipitated by a loss of control on Ms. Wren's part, but it was I who inadvertently escalated the situation.

As a more experienced student, I recognized my role in this, and I failed to act responsibly. I assure you, that going forward, I will personally ensure that Lila receives the guidance she needs to better manage her abilities. This will not occur again."

The headmaster listened intently, his stern expression softening somewhat at Blackwood's professional demeanor and clear articulation of the events.

"Very well," he responded after a moment of consideration. "I appreciate your candor and commitment, Blackwood.

Both of you, learn from this incident. The careless or provocative use of your powers in this academy is unacceptable and can have severe repercussions."

Lila was both confused and shocked at Blackwood's actions inside the headmaster's office. She hadn't expected him to take the blame, nor had she anticipated his robotic, almost scripted response.

As they stepped outside the headmaster's office, Lila threw a glance at Blackwood. His face was expressionless, giving nothing away. "Thank you, for having my back in there," she said, managing a small smile.

"You're welcome, although I didn't do it for you," he replied sharply, his tone cold. "I just didn't want to seem like I was hiding behind a little girl's skirt. I have a reputation to maintain," he added, his words cutting off any room for further conversation as he walked away briskly.

Lila stood there, her mouth agape, stung by his harsh dismissal. As she watched his retreating figure, her initial gratitude turned to irritation.

"Jerk!" she muttered under her breath, glaring at his back. She watched him turn at the end of the hallway.

Whoosh! A sudden, chilling gust of wind rushed past Lila with such force it almost knocked her off her feet. She spun around, her heart pounding, eyes scanning the barren hallway for any sign of what had just disturbed the still air. Nothing. The corridor was empty, the eerie silence amplifying her growing unease.

Her breath quickened, fogging in the cold air as she tentatively resumed walking. But then, a harsh, metallic screech echoed behind her, freezing her in place. With a jolt of fear, she whirled around again. This time, her eyes met a horrifying sight—a dark, undulating shadow suspended in midair, its red, piercing eyes boring into her soul. A scream caught in her throat as she stumbled backward, tripping over her own feet and landing hard on her back.

Paralyzed with terror, Lila lay there, her eyes wide open as the shadow loomed closer, emitting a ghastly shriek that seemed to vibrate through her very bones. In a desperate attempt to shield herself from the terrifying sound, she clamped her hands over her ears and squeezed her eyes shut, her whole body trembling. She lay there curled up on the cold floor, whispering silent prayers for a miracle.

Time stretched into an unbearable eternity. The screeching stopped, replaced by an ominous silence that throbbed in her ears. Tentatively, Lila lifted her hands, the silence breaking as the sound of approaching footsteps echoed down the hallway. Heart in her throat, she braced herself, fearing the worst—that the master of this terrifying shadow was coming for her.

"Lila?" The voice was not menacing, but filled with confusion. "Lila, are you sleeping on the floor?" It was Ezra, her best friend, looking down at her with a puzzled expression.

Gasping for breath, Lila slowly uncurled herself, her body still shaking as she tried to make sense of what had just happened.

Her mind raced, piecing together the reality and the shadows, trying to discern if the danger had passed or if it was just the beginning of something far worse.

Lila scanned her surroundings once more, her eyes darting to every shadow and corner, but the hallway remained ominously silent, devoid of any presence besides her own. Ezra, still looking puzzled, joined her in scrutinizing the area, trying to grasp the situation.

"Is everything okay?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.

"No, did you see that terrifying shadow?" Lila gasped, her breath still ragged from the shock.

"Terrifying shadow?" Ezra echoed, his eyes wide as he turned in a full circle, seeing nothing but the empty corridor. "No, I didn't see anything," he replied, his voice filled with genuine confusion.

"Never mind, it was probably nothing or maybe it's that jerk Blackwood playing tricks!" Lila muttered, brushing off her uniform and trying to compose herself, though her hands still trembled slightly.

"I don't think it was him," Ezra said thoughtfully. "I passed Toby a while ago; he's the one who told me where you were."

"Oh, okay. Maybe it's just this old building playing tricks on me," Lila concluded, trying to convince herself more than Ezra.

She forced a laugh, though it sounded hollow in the empty hallway. Her mind still whirled with the image of those piercing red eyes and the eerie screech. It was hard to dismiss the fear that clung to her, cold and lingering.

Ezra's concern seemed to deepen as he watched Lila try to compose herself. He gave a reassuring smile, aiming to ease the tension. "Let me walk you to your dorm, just to be sure you're okay," he offered, his tone protective.

Lila nodded, grateful for the company. The walk to her dormitory felt longer than usual, her mind replaying the chilling encounter over and over.

Despite Ezra's attempts at casual conversation to distract her, the image of the hovering shadow with its piercing red eyes lingered at the edges of her thoughts.

As they reached the entrance of her dorm building, Lila felt a sense of relief wash over her, not just from the safety the familiar surroundings promised but also from the support Ezra had shown. "Thanks for this, Ezra. I appreciate it," she said, her voice reflecting genuine gratitude.

"Anytime, Lila. Really, if anything else happens, or even if you just need to talk, I'm here," Ezra reassured her, his eyes earnest. He paused, then added, "This academy is full of mysteries, but you don't have to face them alone."

Lila smiled, feeling a bit more at ease. "I'll remember that," she replied.

As Ezra turned to leave, Lila entered her dorm, her spirit bolstered by his kindness but her mind was still alert to the deeper mysteries that might be hiding within the walls of Thornwood Academy.

As Ezra turned to leave, a sudden thought sparked in Lila's mind.

"Hey, Ezra, can I ask you something?" she called out, her voice echoing slightly in the quiet hallway.

Ezra paused and turned back, his expression open and curious. "Of course, what's up?"

"Do you know about the room full of mirrors?" Lila asked.
