He jumped up and hurried to follow. The notion of returning to the room—either of their rooms—was more than enough motivation. Even if they only took a real nap… 7

Without any discussion, they parked in front of and went directly to Jon’s room.

“I guess I ought to just check out, but it’s too late to do it today,” Clay said, as he closed the door behind them. “I’ll do it in the morning before we take off.”

Jon shrugged. “Whatever. If you’re a little short on funds…”

“Oh no, nothing like that. It just seems wasteful. I guess my folks’ frugal habits never quite wore off. I hated how they pinched every penny, but looking back, I guess they had to.”

“Never had to worry about that,” Jon said, his tone and expression thoughtful. “S’pose poverty could be kind of grim, though.”

He began to undress. “I’ve been sweating like a horse. A shower’s going to feel great. Want to join me? I think there’s room for two. We can scrub each other’s backs.”
