Fallen Angel 8

It was about three in the morning. Inside the master bedroom, Kogoro and his women were sleeping soundly. After their parents and daughter bonding moment, they stayed home for a movie night. Conan was, once again, out staying at the professor house. Eri and Ran were still so exhausted from their 'battle', that when the movie was only halfway, they slept on Kogoro's shoulders.

Kogoro had to carry them to their bed. He also went to sleep after that, having spent a considerable amount of energy and not having enough rest.

As the minute arm of the clock on the wall hit twelve, the whole Mouri family was abruptly awoken by the sound of explosion. It was accompanied by the shaking of the ground, signifying its relatively close distance.

"Dad…" Ran was the one who opened her mouth first, and Kogoro immediately went to the window, followed by his wife Eri. He swiped the curtain aside, and looked outside for any signs of where the explosion came from. His expression tightened, and he hurriedly grabbed some clothes before he rushed out of their house to take a look. Eri, who was still standing in front of the window, directly picked up her phone to make a call.

As Kogoro climbed down the stairs, he muttered. "Vermouth!"

His direction was the RSTA headquarters, where a fire had started.

When Eri and Ran caught up with Kogoro, he was already amongst the people from around the block. To no one's surprise, the loud noise and the tremor had disturbed their rest, and attracted them to the source of disturbance.

Eri came up to her husband, and whispered, "I already called the firefighters, the police, and left a message for Hinata-san."

Hearing that, Kogoro reached out and gently squeezed her hand. He whispered back his thanks, while his eyes were still locked to the inferno in front of them.

The Japanese firefighters were one of the fastest in the world when it came to an emergency. Kogoro and his family did not have to wait for too long before they heard the siren coming from the road. The truck stopped directly in front of the talent agency building, and several firefighters got off of the vehicle to start putting out the raging fire.

Ten minutes later, all the people present could see the burnt part of the walls. Kogoro sighed in relief when it did not collapse after such an explosion. Evidently, the one who built the whole thing did not spare any effort or money.

"Mouri-san, what exactly happened?" An elderly neighbor of his asked. Behind him, groups of people living nearby talked in subdued tone with each other.

Kogoro looked helpless, and could only shrug, "Who knows, Morita-sensei. The building was not connected to the gas line, so it couldn't be that. I know that most of the power except for the elevators were off, so that's out of the window. We would have to wait for the police to know the source of the fire."

The elderly ex-teacher nodded, his bald head was not shining as brightly as before the fire was put out. Mr. Morita then excused himself after giving the Mouri family his well-wishes. When the people saw this, they followed behind him, one by one leaving after giving Kogoro their condolences.

The sight of them leaving made Kogoro sighed. His mood was quite complex now that he had some silence. He was able to gather his thoughts, but it did nothing to alleviate the sadness within his heart.

***

Although Kogoro had not been as focused on his development as an entertainer as he did with his detective career, the Rising Star Talent Agency was still something that came out of his idea. It was the symbol of his connection with Hinata, Rukia, Velma, Yuko, and even Yoko. Seeing the physical representation of not only the company, but his women, partly ruined by the fire was a greater hit to his psyche than anyone would think.

The reason was the analysis made by the field officer from the Metropolitan Police Arson Department. They found a remnant from what they believed to be explosives under the rubble in the basement. As to why it was there, Kogoro did not need the officers to tell him the reason.

From her lack of presence, Kogoro concluded that the one who set up the whole thing was his former captive, Vermouth. There might be another Black Organization member around the area, and that member used some kind of device to track down their comrade.

'It reminds me of a theory I heard from my past life!'

One of the more obscure, but sound, fan theory was that Black Organization had planted a tracking device inside of every member's body. That way, they were able to operate seamlessly, even under the eyes of the FBI and CIA. It was also the main reason why they were able to eliminate the former members planted by those organizations.

Of course, there was the question of how the tracking device was not discovered whenever they had to take commercial flights. But given the fact that they had the technology to engineer the creation of the APTX 4689, it was not out of the realm of reason to imagine the Black Organization having created an untraceable tracking device.

Now, Kogoro was also one of the few who subscribed to those lines of thoughts. But he had remembered it a little too late. The damage was done; Vermouth had escaped, and by how she had left, the chance that she was not holding a grudge was close to zero. There was also the matter of the other B.O. member that helped the blonde assassin free.

Kogoro lamented his decision to have a face to face conversation with his former captive. He once again let his dick dictate the course of his action.

'And it might bite me in the ass, this time!'

A few miles away from the spectacle that the Mouri family was facing, Hinata Yamashina was sitting in seiza, opposite of an elderly man whose face resembled her quite a bit. His natural bald head and wrinkled face were a clear sign of his age, but the steadiness of his body belied his frail-looking body.

"As you promised, father. With this, we don't owe them anything anymore." She said to her father, her expression revealed nothing of the stress she was feeling inside. In response, the geezer looked amused, as if unbothered by anything.

"Yes. My friend is many things, but he is not a liar. With this favor, the debt our ancestors made is resolved. We can finally stand as an equal to the Karasuma, at least in terms of political influence. I doubt that we can catch up to their wealth, though. Hahaha!"

After years of putting on a stoic front, Morita Yamashina finally laughed, without a single care in the world.
