Hordes of ghouls were closing on them with every second passed. Ahli and Sharon felt the pressure grow, with them closing their moving area. Every one of them that was put down, another two or three would come after. With his concentration all put on defense, he could only take a peek at the new card that he got that turn.
FOREST MARIONETTE
3+Wood Mana+Wood Mana
[ENCHANT MAGIC]
Use on target unit.
You control that unit for as long Forest Marionette is on the battlefield.
Mana: Wood
A wood card and a new type as well. Enchant magic would stay for as long as it wants unlike Magic Spell or Quickening spells, which are one-time effects only. If another mage uses something to destroy the enchantment, then the enchanting magic will cease to exist.
From a strategic standpoint, Forest Marionette is a strong spell and one that can be used as a game changer. Ahli thought that he could use it to control the necromancer. However, the requirement of two wood mana was a hindrance, with the fact that he only had a few wood cards among the 30 cards that made his deck. Therefore, the possibility of using it against the necromancer would be slim as he needed to escape the waves of ghouls that came at them.
Also, Forest Marionette has the symbol to produce wood mana, it was the card that the two of them had been waiting for.
"SHARON! IT'S HERE!"
"GOOD! DO IT QUICKLY!"
"OKAY! SET FOREST MARIONETTE AS MANA SOURCE!"
Ahli threw the card as he released a backhand slash on a ghoul in front of him. The card quickly transformed into a green shard, joining the rest of the group. With six shards collected, Ahli threw his last remaining card, Dispute in the Pack, toward a ghoul that coming straight at him.
"I PAY 6 MANA. CASTING DISPUTE IN THE PACK! TARGET GHOUL IN FRONT OF ME!"
As Dispute in the Pack flew closer and closer toward the ghoul Ahli had thrown to, it then quickly transformed as light of red and green enveloped it. It entered the ghoul's body as if a soul had entered it.
The ghoul body then started to experience the same phenomenon as the vines that Ahli and Sharon faced in the woods. Its body slowly began to glow white, and when it reached its brightest, a wave of light emitted and spread across the areas. When Ahli saw how the other ghouls surrounding them started to glow red, he knew exactly what would follow after.
"Sharon, get cover!"
Sharon understood quickly with what Ahli meant as she also had experienced it before. She raised her cloak as Ahli closing on her. They both knew that it would be nastier than the vines with the proximity this time was closer than before.
Then, it happened. The one ghoul that Ahli had targeted, released a white light toward the sky, which then split into many beams that fell into every other ghoul.
At the same time, those other ghouls also sent a blast of red beams onto the targeted ghouls. The light emitted with this sequence was so bright, brighter even than the one with the vines, almost blinding Ahli even though it happened only for 10 seconds.
As the light faded, the sound of rattling bones started to be heard and with more and more of them jerking uncontrollably, the sound itself just got louder and louder. Then, came the first pop sound, followed by a wet sensation that hit Ahli's back. The ghouls started to explode one by one, Ahli did not see it as he did not want to see it, however from the repeated pouring of wet flesh onto them, he knew that it was doing just fine cleaning the ghoul.
When the sound started to fade like microwave popcorn that stopped popping, Ahli and Sharon came out of their cover and stood to check their surrounding. A full area that was flooded with undead monstrosity now had been mostly wide empty.
What Ahli saw was there were still some that popping and breaking to pieces in quite the distance, but with this, they were able to clear the path toward the necromancer.
"Good job." Said Sharon as she tried to clean some of the flesh that was still sticking to her cloak.
"Thanks. But, I have to tell you, that basically, I'm useless for the next 3 turns."
<TURN 7>
"Why is that?"
"I only have one card in my hand now, and it's called Dew of Life, which is technically not working properly if I don't have any enchant magic in effect." Answered Ahli as he revealed the card to Sharon.
DEW OF LIFE
Wood Mana+Wood Mana
[Magic Spell]
You gain 1 life for each wood spell in effect.
Mana: Wood
"Okay. How long are 3 turns?"
"Around 6 minutes."
"That's enough time to reach the necromancer. By then, I'm counting on you." Sharon started to walk away from Ahli. She was moving in the direction of the necromancer.
Ahli saw Dew of Life one more time and was a little disappointed with himself. If he knew that the next card coming would be another that can be used as a mana source, he might wait for another turn. But then, he quickly erased such thought in his head as it was a classic problem with card players. There were always "if only" moments. He reminded himself of what Jena's taught him after their first match.
[We adapt to the situation and do what's best. There must be no regret on our path to victory.]
Ahli then held tight Dew of Life as he stepped forward, going in the same direction as Sharon's.
[I believe you will be useful in this battle.]
As he was about to increase his running speed, he felt something. The feeling of being watched intensely. He stopped and started to look around. As his eyes tried to find anything in the dark, he saw a glimpse of a young girl, who might be in her early teens. She looked Asian, with blonde yellow hair, but the moonlight gave her skin that pale color as if she was not alive.
Ahli could feel that it was her that gave out the intense feeling. Then, what he saw quite a bit freaked him out. The girl smiled at him, and not that sweet smile, but that one creepy sadistic one, as if she just told him, "You are below me, pig."
Ahli rubbed his eyes to make sure that he was not mistaken, as well as to try to get a better focus on the girl. Yet, when he looked in the same direction, the girl had gone. Multiple questions started to fill his thought.
[I'm not hallucinating, am I? She was real, right?]
[Could it be…A GHOST!?]
[Can't be a vampire right? With that white skin? Maybe…but, are there any vampires in this world? Well, they had demons, vampires might be included in the set.]
He looked again once more in the same direction and it was the same empty view, only trees at the edge of the forest. He was unsure, but quickly he reminded himself of the important matter at hand. Ahli quickly ran after Sharon. At that moment, he could not forget the smile she gave, and somehow it had carved into his memory.
