Because of last night's ball there was a lot of gossip being heard in the high noble society at the moment, the most notable of which was what the Duke of Blair who had somehow gotten back close to his former fiancée was doing. 

Shirley was either happy or angry at the moment when she heard the maids talking about this. This rumor had spread so much that even the maids were talking about it.
