CHAPTER 18 - TALK

"Of course not. Do you really think so?"

"Yes." Elena laughed after saying that. "Okay, okay. I think it's time for me to rest and ..." Elena looked at Cameron who was now nailing his gaze right into her eyes. "What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Why with my gaze?" Cameron asked back.

Oh damn!

"Is the wifi network in your house that bad?" Elena ignored Cameron's question by pretending to check the wifi network on her cell phone. She held her phone high as she walked around Cameron.

"Can be silent?"

"Of course not." Elena smirked. "I need a network to check messages that come into my cell phone as well as emails that may be very important,"

"That's just your excuse for not answering my question, El." Cameron restrained Elena as he said that. His gazes collided and Elena immediately gave herself a defense so as not to be hypnotized by Cameron's suddenly incredibly charming gaze.

Luckily it didn't last long because suddenly a woman's voice was calling Cameron's name very clearly.

"Cam!"

"I heard a woman's voice I'm pretty sure it wasn't momma," Elena said as she let go of Cameron's grip on her arm.

"Cam! I know you just came and—" Emily suddenly stopped when she saw Elena not far from Cameron.

"Elena Smith," Elena held out her hand to Emily. "Work colleague." Elena added before Emily even shook her hand.

"Emily."

"Don't get me wrong, I'm forced to stay here because I haven't had time to book a hotel and ..." Elena glanced at Cameron, hoping the man who had caused this mess would help her.

"It doesn't matter. My relationship with Cameron isn't anything special anyway," Emily said with a smile.

"What are you saying?" Cameron raised his voice when he asked Emily this.

"Aw, I better not be here or ... sorry if I'm being rude. But maybe you guys can talk outside?" Elena added a smirk at the end of her sentence.

"Sure, with pleasure." Cameron answered and asked Emily to come out with him.

A short meeting that was quite tense and unexpected.

Elena lay down and stared at the high ceiling of Cameron's room, her mind wandering thinking about the short unexpected encounter with Emily just now.

Just as Elena had expected that Emily was very beautiful and also ... funny. Wait a minute, is it funny to describe Emily's tiny and adorable figure?

***

"Your girlfriend?" Emily asked matter-of-factly after they were both quite far from the house.

"You care?"

"Of course. I have to see if your partner can love my daughter or not,"

"I should have told you that." Cameron answered coldly.

"Momma knows him, you know him too,"

"Is that the only reason?"

Emily was silent for a moment before she spoke again.

"You didn't even discuss this with me at all. I accepted your wedding invitation and it seems you don't have the slightest intention of canceling the wedding," Cameron is back.

"Indeed,"

"Don't you love me anymore? Is it because I've been in DC more than here with you and Brielle?" Cameron started bombarding Emily with questions that he could clearly defend with his full defense, such as, he would defend the statement he just made about being in DC too long under the pretext that Emily ordered it. Because in reality it is.

"I love you," Emily replied.

"So?"

"I love you, Cam, it's just that I don't feel alive. There's something I can't feel when I'm with you,"

"Tell me clearly,"

Emily glared. "I'm neither a witness nor a suspect in a case you're working on, Cam. Stop asking me questions like that,"

"You're saying things I can't understand, Emily!" Cameron started to raise his voice again.

"Cam!" Emily looked at Cameron. "I can't talk to you if you act like this,"

Cameron nodded his head. "That's because you've been swayed by the geek's charms!"

"Seriously, Cam! That geek you just mentioned has a name," Emily protested loudly.

"And I hate to mention his name." Cameron closed the small argument between himself and Emily by leaving Emily and going back into his house.

Cameron obviously hadn't thought the slightest bit about how lonely Emily had been all these years, he never would have guessed that Emily felt so empty when she was with him that she fell into another man's arms and decided to leave him.

"Gosh, Cam!!" Elena screamed as Cameron entered the room without warning. She had just finished taking a shower and was only wearing her underwear.

As a normal man of course Cameron felt something beneath him throb several times. He hated Elena because she was a rival who could compete with his performance and could threaten his position in the office. But this scene had nothing to do with the hatred he felt for an Elena Smith.

"Pervert brain!" Elena cursed Cameron while grabbing a loose t-shirt that she could wear as a mini dress.

"You didn't give me the cue," Cameron said casually. He walked over to the small sofa in the corner of his room.

"One of your skills that I hate the most is that you're always sneaking around so I often don't hear you coming,"

"I walk like most people. Do I need to take you to the hospital?"

Elena scowled in annoyance. "You think I need the services of an ENT doctor? Gosh, crazy!"

Cameron just chuckled and didn't reply to what Elena had just said.

"How's Emily?" the question suddenly slipped from Elena's mouth.

"Arguing as usual," Cameron said.

"What a debater. Do you really not understand how to melt a woman's heart?"

"That's one of the reasons why I brought you here," Cameron said firmly.

"For God's sake," Elena rolled her eyes. "Now I understand why you decided to have an open relationship with Emily up until now,"

Stop being so clueless, Litigator."

"Ha!" Elena threw the towel wrapped around her head at Cameron. "You had absolutely no intention of marrying Emily because you were afraid of facing a reality that might be very cruel in a marriage relationship, right?" Elena said it while putting her hands on her hips. "Honestly, Cam, you can't fool me at all."

Cameron got up from his seat and approached Emily who still had her arms around her waist while looking at her with judgment. "You think so?"

"Yes." Elena answered firmly.

"What if my answer is that I still have no intention of marrying Emily because I'm after something else?"

"That means I don't have to bother with helping you get it again, Cam. Right?"
